Mega File Sharing

I got my confirmation email on Sunday just after i signed up, couldn't upload anything that day though.

I did manage to upload a small .PDF file yesterday so it works, I guess they're getting hammered for bandwidth.

Edit: Uploading at 250KB/s this morning, it's improved. :)

This guy is (and always has been) a complete egomaniac. If you look back into his recent past you will find out he scammed millions from people by setting up fake companies and promising what he could not deliver. I remember one of the scams being a rally that was supposed to take on Gumball.

Anyway it's very impressive what he has done and he certainly knows how to drum up stuff.

I was actually kinda looking forward to the new site, but it's been a complete flop from the point of the user. Constantly down, failed uploads, IP logging. They should not be calling themselves the privacy company and then logging every single IP (and displaying your IP history in your account). Plus they should have done some sort of controlled rollout at launch, perhaps limiting to 100,000 users and then gradually opening it up

One of the most impressive ones I remember was when he bought a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy and publicly announced he was going to invest several million dollars, share prices rocketed from people suddenly gaining interest and he sold his share at the inflated price :D

Yeah it was a UK company, but that was long ago. He's done worse things since then

Wait, what?

I'm not sure I understand how this new website is any different from the hundreds of others such as rapidshare etc.

The only thing I see that looks new is the encryption, but surely anyone who doesn't want people to look into his private data can either encrypt them and then upload them, or simply rar-password them.

It's not something that people who cared about the privacy of their data were not doing before.

It appears that this is now done automatically by that website, but it doesn't mean everyone will want to go through that process. What happens if you want to share data with colleagues etc? It just gets cumbersome.

All in all, it adds a feature that most people don't really care, and those that do already had a process in place before it.

The only differentiator I see is a the big advertising campaign. Given that the site is owned by someone who is under conditions from the court which could see the plug pulled on the site quickly, I cannot understand why anyone would rush to upload their data to his website. He clearly has no credibility when it comes to such ventures given his prior record and there is no way that any serious business would trust him with their data continuation plans.

So, overall, we are not talking about anything new here, just another file host as all the rest, and from an ill-reputed owner to boot.

I'm pretty sure "the authorities" think it's an excellent idea. It's nice to have all the worlds "dodgy" content uploaded to one specific site so that when they go after him again they have everything nice in one place with account details for everyone concerned.... :/

I'm sure there's plenty of legit uses for it as well, although it's hard to see why I would choose to use it over dropbox/box.net/skydrive etc... Perhaps it's juts me, but I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable enough to entrust any private/valuable data to it as it stands, maybe just my perception though...
