MeganeX superlight 8K

Well I'm afraid it's not great news. My headset arrived yesterday.

Software is a joke, took me an hour to get it powered on, worked for an hour then wouldn't work again. Took another hour to get going.
I've just reinstalled windows from scratch this morning and it does seem a bit better now, time will tell.

Lenses are very much like the pico 4, just with 10 degrees less fov. Glare!
Poor edge to edge clarity.
There is warping at the edges and in the middle. The middle looks floaty if you are reading menus.
OLED is OLED, great colours and blacks but you do need to change the display settings by boosting the brightness and contrast.
Brightness is ok, fov is usable.
Headstrap is a pain to get dialed in, which you must do as the sweetspot is quite narrow.
Comfort, it's fairly light but to get into the sweetspot it's almost sat on my nose. Think the quest3 with aubika strap was more comfortable.
No way can you ever use this as a monitor replacement, lenses are nowhere near good enough.
Sharpness, tried 4084x4084 and also 5000x5000 doesn't look pin sharp to me, it's not bad but probably a bit worse than say a crystal light
CA, not noticed any CA which is one good thing I guess

Is it worth £1,599.....no

Knowing what I know now would I buy it again....no

What should you do? buy the BSB2 or wait for something else

What am I going to do? I've asked for a refund, but if I don't get one I'll probably keep it till Christmas and sell for the pimax dream air (depending on user reviews, not youtubers!)

Takeaway....doesn't matter how good the panels are, the lenses are critical to making a good vr headset

There's the Pimax headsets, but they too can have janky software and there seems to be a new model every week, plus of course they're huge and not exactly lightweight.

The BSB2 looks like the best bet for an ultralight headset with decent resolution, but even that's compromised as it can only run its displays at full res at 75hz, and upsamples if it's 90hz.

Still it's mighty tempting to me given that I already have a full Index setup with lighthouses and controllers just gathering dust.

oh yeah, I won't be wanting the super but the dream air looks decent on paper at least.....plus pimax software isnt as bad as meganex lol

It is good there are now lots of options for replacing an Index headset (though expensive). I only kept my Index kit in case this happened, but so far no headset except the BSB2 has been tempting enough.

That sounds terrible for the price you paid. I hope they accept your refund.

Thanks for your thoughts fella. That's **** to hear but really useful feedback. I honestly think the Youtube 'VR reviewer' scene is a joke. VR Flightsimguy is half decent, but most of them sound like they don't have a clue what they're talking about and never provide any meaningful stats or info. "The colours look great". "WOW". "YES!".... is about all you get.

One reason that the MeganeX didn't make my hitlist, is their return policy. They've made it very clear (and in fairness so have several VR reviewers) that Shiftall do not accept returns if you don't like the headset. Unless you can prove it's 'faulty' in some way, I think you're screwed?

Thay can't legally do that, no matter what the small print says, they still have to abide by the UK distance selling regulations.

Wow! That's a pretty shocking review for a £1600 headset. Thanks for your review @glenimp617.

Returns policy? For an online purchase, isn't it the standard 14 day return? Perhaps opening the box and try the headset voids that consumer right maybe.

No as part of the distance selling regulations you are allowed to open and inspect the item, and even use it before then deciding it's not for you.

as long as it is in "as new" condition, then they legally have to accept returns.

Does UK consumer law apply if you're buying direct from a Japanese supplier? Genuine question. At best it's a grey area I would have thought. At worst I'd say you're ******....

From citizensadvice.org:

"If you bought something from a company based outside the UK

Your rights might be different if you bought something from abroad.
You should check the seller’s terms and conditions to find out if you can return the item. If you can return it, you should check who will pay for the return postage and if you can get the original delivery cost refunded."

From Shiftall's website 'legal' page aka 'Terms & Conditions':

"Returning or exchanging products for customer reasons

Please contact us within 8 days of receiving the product and return the product to the specified address with prepaid shipping charges. (Shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer.)

However, we will not accept returns or exchanges in the following cases

  1. Products that have been used even once (including when the power is turned on)
  2. Products that are clearly marked as non-returnable (except for initial defects)
  3. Other items as specified by the Company."

I'm not saying it's 'right' or a 'good' thing by the way. I think it sucks balls. Which is why the MeganeX is not on my next headset list at all.

But according to VR YouTubers this headset is amazing the best thing ever!!!!

This is why I wait for in-depth reviews from Norm at Tested. He normally nails the advantages and disadvantages each headset. Sadly it looks like there is no 'perfect' VR headset yet. They all have compromises.

Quest Pro for me comes close, despite the relatively low-res panels and older chipset, but then Meta completely abandoned it.

If you pay by credit card or PayPal you might get a little bit of traction, but yeah beyond initial missing package or turns up broken then you are pretty much out of luck if the company decides not to support you.

Having been through all this with Pimax, I wouldn't buy another headset that's not stocked in the UK

I've never bought Pimax, but for my sins I am considering the Super or the Dream Air.

One thing that Pimax do have going for them is their returns policy. It's clearly stated you can try any headset out for 14 days and then send it back if you're not happy. And they even pay postage.

If that's true you really can't fault that. At all. Are you telling me that's not the case?

This is a big reason why I've pre-ordered the Crystal Super. If it's crap, I'll just send it back.

There have been issues reported with returning Pimax headsets to Pimax. Things like delaying tactics, charging a 'restocking' fee, etc. Maybe things have changed recently. My advice would be to if possible buy a Pimax through a UK supplier like Amazon for a solid returns policy, their headsets do get sold from within the UK after a bit of delay.

No however you should still come under section 75 consumer credit act, so if something is faulty or broken you have some coverage there. What you can't do is return it because you don't like or want it.
