Melted CableMod 4090 90 degree adapter

Keep it until the warranty would have run out naturally. Then it will have the same resale value of every other 4090 out there… practically nothing. In fact it might be worth more as it has a USP “as made famous on OCUK”

I’m delighted you got it sorted.

Yeah the connectors were ordered direct from Nvidia, which is why it took a bit longer than they first expected, would have been a quick next day job if they had the connectors in stock.
Only thing I thought looked different was the sense pins, they seemed to be set a little further back than the old connector. And it felt like a tighter connection overall, guess time will tell, but I'm not sure the new connector will alleviate the problems anyway, since most people with melting issues all report that the cable was fully seated.

Fingers crossed its all OK now, but have to say I'll be a little on edge from now on lol
In that case, I would stop worrying about the card now and actually try to start enjoying games again :)

Yeah finally started Starfield last night, it's not bad so far. Will just keep going and fingers crossed I don't get unlucky again.
Worst case scenario if it goes again in a year or so I suppose a £114 repair bill isn't the end of the world.
Let's hope Nvidia sees sense and bins off that stupid connector for the 50 series

Well, nobody has been unlucky enough to have had their 4090 connector melt twice right - especially since upgrading to the new sense pins connector?

Regarding the 50 series, power requirements for GPUs are only going to go up so what other connectors are they going to use if not the revised sense-pin connectors?

Doubling-up on the 12VHPWR connector would probably avoid the issue as well. (Assuming they properly distribute the load accross both connectors)

Hmm, was there any way they could have made the old 8-pin connectors work on the 4090 instead of releasing the single 12VHPWR monstrosity?

It does sound like you may have the new type of connector with the shorter sense pins , fingers crossed its all good for you . I will take pics of mine and check the markings on the connector as i have to reapply new LM and pads so will open it up when its back.

Can always go back to the tried and tested 8 Pin connector , 3 of them should happily handle 900W if not more and is so much safer than the new connector . Some careful cable management and can still look neat and tidy as in pic :D

Afaik the only card to currently have 2 12VHPWR connectors is the Galax HOF card which comes with a 660W Bios ... can potentially run 1200W through 2 of them so plenty of head room and would be surprised if we also see them melt

3 x 8 pin on GPU - Issues in 2 years of ownership : none what so ever and was left on constantly mining for over a year :D

1 x 12VHPWR on GPU- Issues in 11 months of ownership : 3 new power cables required and another melted in that time frame , great idea fitting these to a GPU

Doesn't 3x 8-pin connector only output a max 525w? (75w PCIe slot and 3x 150w)

That's in line with the specs I have always heard for the connectors, but the old spec seems to have a LOT more headroom.

If i had no access to official specs of either connector, I would expect 3 PCIe connectors to be able to carry more current than one 12VHPWR connector just based on the available contact area and cable feeding into the connection points.

I get the impression that the engineers thought the amount of headroom on the old PCIe spec was total overkill, and decided a better-looking connector could be made if we just let go of the silly safety margin.

It can handle so much more than that as can be seen with the 12VHPWR using just 2 x 8 pin PSU side to supply 600W so 300W each no reason the GPU side wont accept the same , Also you have the EPS for the CPU will draw in excess of 300W if needed and no melting of those either ... if it ain't broke don't fix it :D

They're rated for 150 officially, but I've had it in my head that they actually do 300, but I can't remember where I got that, maybe watching a buildzoid video.

This is from the transcript of this video (@ 36:30):

"I still don't get why this connector exists, I really don't. Three eight pins are just better than this, yes, they're not rated for 600 watts, but have you ever heard how R9 290x's when overclocked would pull 400 watts and up, on an 8+6 pin power connector configuration.

Actually high-end gpus historically when overclocked would massively overload their power connectors and it was fine, because there was this monstrous safety margin built into them. Literally the connector was rated for half of what it can actually take and so even when you were overclocking, gpus that would regularly go from 250, 300 watts all the way up to 400 - 500 watts and it was fine.

That's not saying that it is okay to ship a 8+6 pin card with a 450 watt power limit, don't do that, but the 12 volt high power connector as far as I'm concerned, is just a downgrade from three separate eight pins, because the spec even tells you that it is just worse."

Second update from my end, CableMod have refunded the full amount of my repair as well as the original cost of the connector and postage costs into my PayPal account this morning.
Great service from them, good to know they have our backs.
Hope everyone else with this problem gets sorted soon
Must be payout day for them as I also received full refund for shipping/ repair & adapter this morning :D

Glad to hear you are all sorted now mate, feels good to be back in action on PC.
Luckily I have a PS5 so could still get my gaming fix while the card was away but it's hard going back to 60fps now lol.
Fingers crossed we don't have this happen again

Funny enough I also have a PS5 so haven't missed on the gaming action, gave me some time to progress further in FF16 and got my COD kicks from the free warzone version which tbh I was pleasantly surprised how well it ran on PS5 . It hasn't quite got the shine of the PC version at 4k ultra settings but FPS is where it should be which is the most important thing in this game, also once into the game I struggled to tell the difference apart from not looking quite as sharp as PC.... did make me think do I really need a £1700 GPU

Yeah I have a Samsung Neo G9 5120x1440 Ultrawide so going back to the TV just felt a bit off to me. To be fair though you are right, visually WZ doesn't look bad at all on PS5, unfortunately my TV is locked to 60hz so don't get the 120fps option. I mainly played Armored Core 6, which I've just finished so can concentrate on Starfield now, so many good games coming over the next couple months, expensive times

My main screen is an LG CX oled which I mainly play PC on so wasn't that big of a jump apart from FF16 which runs at 30fps :o ( 4090 would excel here  ) . I also use a 1440p 240hz monitor but hasn't been turned on since the 4090 went but again only use that if I want to get real sweaty on cod etc . Many good games on the way shortly, MGS collection, Final Fantasy Rebirth, Mw3 plus many others, should keep me entertained for a bit :D
