Hi firends,

I would like some advice on memory.

Can you please suggest some memory to be used with the following;

Asus X79 Sabertooth Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail

Will be purchasing all other componants, so if you have any suggestions on GPU I would be grateful.

Will need a case, I do have an ANTEC 1200 Gaming Case which must be the first version as the ones listed on OC are simular but not the same.

Thanks in advance.... ShaVerZ

You could buy a Z77 or the one Nemesis379 linked.

I have the model above that MSI (X79A-GD65 8D) which has 8 DDR3 1600Mhz quad channel slots. 95% of other boards have 4 dual channel slots. Can highly recommend (link to it in my signature) - However you would need to change to a 2011 socket processor like the i7 3820 which I also have - the prices are around the same.

Thanks Barry... I've decided to go with the same as you in relation to Mobo, CPU and Memory...

What case including PSU would you recommend and would you go for just the 4 DIMMS of Memory in the kit or buy 2 kits (8DIMMS)?

Thanks for all your help... Shame my Nvidia 8800GTS is so outdated now, looks like I will have to purchase a new GPU also :(

No worries, mate! Glad you have gone with that one. Did you see the bundle?
Krypton X79 Bundle

That's how I got it all.. For my parts separately it comes to £510. For the bundle it's £536 but this is because they give you max overclocking options (they should come at stock values but you can adjust in the motherboard if need be). I ordered an additonal 4x4GB on top to make it 24GB but you shouldn't need more. 8GB quad channel will suffice, IMO.

I would recommend a good brand PSU that is at least 650W. So perhaps an Antec, Corsair, XFX, OCZ or CoolerMaster. I personally have a Corsair TX850 which is in my signature. It's not modular though. I have 850W so that I will be able to SLI or CrossFire my GFX in the future (still deciding what GFX card to purchase at the end of the month).. It depends what card(s) you're going for and how many different components you're using - like hard drives, additional PCIe cards etc. If you have 1-2 HDDs not including an SSD and a mid-high end range GFX card with limited PCIe cards used then you should be fine with a good branded 650W. I'd recommend going for a 750 or 850 just in case, though. For convenience also I would definitely recommend a modular since you don't have to worry about spare cables clogging up your case. Here's a good one for example -TX750M - Kind of wish I went for this one instead of my non modular TX850 tbh. :(

My case

This case does the job. Good air flow, fairly big and can fit 8 case fans including an 80mm one on the back side door behind the motherboard. Just be aware that the free cooler you get with the motherboard is HUGE and you will not be able to fit 2 fans on the side, only one (the very bottom fan slot on the case opening side - the one above will be blocked unless you fit it on the outside which is what I did). Aesthetically there are better cases out there. If you want good aesthetics then buy one of the white NZXTs which look awesome albeit something from a Sci-Fi movie set in the 2100s, lol. Who knows, you might even have an identical rig to mine. :D

You'll definitely need a new graphics card for newer games mate. Definitely worth investing in. The GTX 480 is a great shout if you're an NVIDIA fan or if you're willing to switch to RADEON then go for a HD 7850 or 6970 - Both of these have better VRAM than the 480 but benchmarking suggests all 3 are pretty close.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps! :)

Thanks for the long post... All the info helps :)

I'll take a look later when I get 5, thanks again.

I use to have major problems with ATI, was a good 8yrs ago but the problems put me off for life... I'm sure they've improved a lot since those days...

It's a shame I can't upgrade my old Quad Core but i'll keep it as spare, always comes in handy having another in the cupboard. Just a shame as it cost me a fortune a few years back....

Thanks again mate, i'll keep you posted with my progress...

You're welcome. :) Oh btw the 750 I linked referred you to the main page. Updated so you can see in case you didn't search manually.

I've had this HD 4850 for 4 years without any problems. But I've always had NVIDIA before that. I don't think they're quite so bad now and from what I see on these boards most people choose Radeon. Definitely get the GTX 480 otherwise mate. Cheaper alternative would be a 560ti. Not sure how much you know about GFX cards but the advice is there just in case. :p

Tbh I still have a Q6600 2.4ghz which I have had since 2007 (OC'd to 3ghz 3 years ago) and it's still surprisingly a highly usable chip. Only had my new system for about 3 weeks. It's worth noting that games are still far behind current CPUs with regards to performance conjunction. The other week, I was running BF3 with my Q6600 build with 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM and HD 4850 on high (not ultra) settings and was getting consistent 30FPS. That setup would have been good 4-5 years ago. Just shows that you only need a little bit more for even the newest games... However I would definitely upgrade everything for even more longevity. ;)

Good stuff Shane. :)

Have you thought about buying a SSD as well? Definitely a great benefit for your OS. Will you have Windows 7 64 Bit btw? That's essential if you're having 4GB RAM or more otherwise if you're using 32 bit Windows it will not pick up the rest of your memory!!

Haha, it looks like our systems will be pretty much identical barring the drives. :D
