Mercedes launch thread

Not enough people or money for that to happen now. I'm starting to think they will re-evaluate their position in F1 once all the Mclaren payments are made and spent. I understand why they felt they could just stay with Mclaren with Mclaren car building but I fear this is going to end up another BMW.

Such a shame about these noses, they need banning like the X wings purely because they are hideous.

what are you on about?
Bob Bell
aldo costa
geoff willis
+ hundreds of factory staff recruiting during 2011
this year will be mercedes first real crack at formula one since they took over the team.

thje 2010 car was designed with low staffing levels from brawn sacking 40% of the workforce in 2009
2011 car was pretty much the same which is why it looked so plan and basic at the start of the season.

the 2012 car looks like a real car with the details you expect from a top teams car, they only just finally got rid of the brawn snow plow wing ffs

But all those new employees put even more pressure on. If Merc go to all those efforts and then still just sit in the no mans land in 4th then giving up and going elsewhere must certainly look pleasing to the top bosses.

Toyota showed that its not just about throwing money in.

good job Dieter Zetsche understands the importance of f1 to mercedes then :)

anyway the car looks a lot more race ready than last years so they should atleast close the gap and be fighting for 5th and 6th

they owned a 40% stake in mclaren, its part of that stake that bought brawn

looks good without the step :D

Daimler AG owned 40% of McLaren, as well as Mercedes being an engine supplier to Sauber and McLaren in recent history. Daimler bought 75.1% of the shares of Brawn GP.

Mercedes owns 45.1% of the new company with 30% for Aabar Investments and 24.9% for Ross Brawn

Being an engine supplier is very different to having your own team.

Making the step up is a massive change for Merc that represents massive investment and a certain level of expectation. Failing to meet that expectation will mean Merc jump ship.

Honda, Toyota, Renault and BMW didn't jump ship for the fun of it. They left because they weren't getting the results. I seriously doubt that Mercedes aim for F1 was to "come 4th".

Mercedes have a stronger motorsport heritage than most of those. Plus they are more committed to F1 through their engine deals than Honda, BMW, Toyota and even Renault were.

They have already been a part team owner with Daimler's 40% stake in McLaren.

Personally, I don't think they are going anywhere soon. They know that it takes years to build success. Only more recently have they made their mark on the old Brawn team, recruiting key staff etc.. The next 5 years will be telling.

I definitely think they will stay as an engine supplier. I can't see them doing too many more seasons in 4th as a full works team though.

How many ex technical directors do they have now three, four or more :D
Geoff Willis role will be interesting to watch, I was never that convinced with him as a technical director.

I feel that with the people brought in if they are not winning races this year serious questions need to be asked about their involvement.

Surely it will take a few years before the new team (i.e all those new ex-tech directors) has gelled and really ready to make it's mark on the car.

They haven't even had a single full year together yet.

The new regulations coming in after next year will be a massive opportunity.

why are you always so negative about mercedes and schumacher?

Who said anything about Schumacher? And I'm not being negative about Merc, I'm being realistic. I've said many times that I hope they move forward. But no amount of heritage or funding or personnel is going to keep Merc interested if they keep coming 4th...

Stop trying to start fights.

someone already explained its not a full works team...

mercedes have a 45.1% stake in the team which is only 5.1% more than they had with mclaren

Mechanics working for the Brackley based team are making more efforts than usual to hide the front and rear of the car, and erecting huge screens in front of the pits between test runs in Barcelona.

But a big secret is now out of the bag, and it’s located beneath the rear rain light and being described by insiders as “like a double diffuser”.

Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport said the feature is believed to produce an effect similar to the one pioneered by Mercedes’ predecessor Brawn GP in 2009, which resulted in the championship for Jenson Button.

And according to Auto Motor und Sport, the concept differs to the banned double diffuser because the air is channelled through holes at the rear of the engine cover.

The concept, despite complying with the FIA’s blown diffuser clampdown, also reportedly involves the clever redirection of exhaust gases.

And yet another innovation on the Mercedes could be a passive ‘F-duct’-style addition to the car’s new rear wing, working alongside the ‘DRS’ system.

When asked about the ‘ducts’, Rosberg and Schumacher played it coy: “What’s that?” Rosberg answered, while Schumacher joked that it sounds like something that should go “quack!”

it probably only gives about as much downforce as the monkey seat a lot of teams are using but has the advantage of not causing drag

The big flaw in that claim is that it uses exhaust gasses. It cant. The rules state all exhaust gasses must exit through the exhaust pipes, and exit in the prescribed area.

It could be using the air channeled through the sidepods though, but with such a glaring mistake in the claims you have to question how much else is wrong or just made up.

Typical testing press.
