Mercedes servicing - £669 for basically an oil change on a 6-year old car...?!

This.

My local garage will change oil and filters for half an hour's labour (£35).

Garages won't charge that.. usually.its £45-50 for an oil and filter change..

For that money I'd want my

Oil and filter
Air filter
Cabin filter
Fuel filter
Break/clutch fluid

Changed .

This is why I wouldn't want to go to a mail dealer for servicing.

What are the checks ? First aid kit ? I'd take that first aid kit £50 check and tell them to get under the bonnet.

I thought they couldn't invalidate a warranty as long as manufacturer spec parts were used and it was done by a VAT registered business
This is only for original manufacturers new car warranty, they can stipulate whatever they want for extended warranty products because as @Dis86 points out, extended warranties are effectively just insurance products.

Main Stealer pricing, I recently took an S400L in for fault-finding and they had a disclaimer of an £180/hour if the issue turned out not to a warranty-covered defect

If it makes you feel better £1200 for last service. That included MOT, minor service (oil, filters), 4 new CC2 tires, new brake fluid, and new suspension bushings :/ at a dealership.

I replaced the original battery with a bosch AGM battery - the 3008 doesn’t need recoding but replacing requires a fully powering down the EMS. New battery has been S/S for more time than the old manufacturer one.

Any tips, or do I just have to suck it up?

Yeah don't use the mercedes stealer .... sorry I mean dealer. Main dealer servicing is well known to be an absolute rip off.

Google for local Mercedes specialists near you and then check reviews online to find one that seems to have a decent reputation. Give them a try ? if you don't like the service, just don't go back and try another. Rinse and repeat until you find one you like and trust and keep using them.

For a 6year old E class diesel you could arguably use any local garage too. A 6 year old diesel merc is not a specialist piece of machinery that your local garage won't know how to change the oil on. Nobody takes their 6 year old car to the main dealer unless they have ££££ to burn and don't give a ****. Which isn't most people.

As to your point about Extended warranty, as others have pointed out, these aren't warrantys. It's an insurance product, and if you check the small print there will be LOADS of exceptions in there that gives them plenty of room to wriggle out of most things. In my experience these products are rarely worth it when you factor in the cost of forcing you to use the mercedes dealer who overcharges you by £4/500 a service. Add up this additional cost + the cost of the extended warranty and then subtract how much you actually get back and you'll find the house always wins.

Just don't renew and stop using the main dealer.

£670 for an oil change on a car?

Scania don't charge that for a 13 litre 44ton tractor unit which incidentally holds 40 litres of oil!
