Metal Detectors to Become the Norm in UK Schools

Its not called that anymore. Resistant Materials when I was at school and that was nearly a decade ago.

Guess that's me showing my age then. Which reminds me, it's my Birthday today so I'm yet another bloody year older.

We had Woodwork, Metalwork and Craft & Technology back when I was at school.

Do they still use chisels in woodwork?

Do indeed, i got stabbed in the neck with one two years ago ! (sounds worse than it is)

Anyway

What a total and utter waste of time money and effort.

While we still can we should be spending money on other ways to tackle this sort of thing, metal detectors sounds too american where the issue is obviously out of control and they just have to do there best. I would like to think we still have a hope in hell in doing something about it.

Can't wait to leave this country.

How exactly can being stabbed in the neck sound worse then it is?? :D

Well the sharp part of a chisel is fairly small. Just made a little fanny shaped whole and leaked blood every time i turned my head.

Wasn't like some malicious attack either, just a little prod :)

was quite funny when i got to hospital. Before being glued up a nurse took me aside to a little office thing (like those finance offices in comet, currys etc) and asked me a load of questions. Such as "does this happen often in your school?" wtf lol.

Hehe, definitely not one of those! lol. Like i said more of a playful 'prod' if you will.

You should have said, "It's not his fault, I hear his wife is cheating on him". :D

lmao. :D Wish i had, if i wasn't so naive I would have.

Took me till recently to realise how much trouble the school could have got in. Especially since the kid who done it should have never been allowed such a tool let alone to be in a class with other students!

violent kid or another reason?

Violent kid, has ADHD and all that crap. Just a general mischief maker.

And just plain dangerous. playing with power tools etc.

He was expelled in the end. But after a little too much if you ask me!

Yeah because its dangerous to carry a knife. I carried one in school for 4 years and not once used it for anything sinister. Due to spending a lot of time pulling various peoples PCs to bits, carrying a penknife on your keyring was just handy to do.

Dare I say it ive also had a few BB guns in school too, as after school we used to use my mates long back garden for a spot of target practicing. Never pulled that on anyone either, not in school at least.

So right let me get this straight. In order for this to be effective they will need to place detectors at every door, or limit access to a single door correct? (utterly unpractical limiting 2000 people to a single door). Searching pupils every time they enter the school? So in the morning, after a break, lunch and in some schools after an afternoon break?

A hypothetical situation if you will. Say 1000 of the schools 2000 pupils arrive within 10 min before 9. And scanning them takes 30s, by the time belts, coins, keys, phones, ipods etc have been removed and replaced etc thats 500min!! By my basic calculations (and bear in mind its 5:30 am so i might be well out) in order to process these pupils within 10 min you would need 50 scanners???? Even If your scan time was 3s it would still be pretty unworkable with regard to breaks etc!! Come on!!! Schools have enough stress and tight enough schedule without having to worry about this sort of garbage.

I carried an assortment of scalpels, Stanley knives small saws and other pointy things for use in art and design. As did half the class for most of sixth year and plenty of art store cupboard scalpels went missing, no one ever got stabbed. Home economics class was well stocked with knifes and although they were accounted for I can't imagine it being to difficult to acquire one. Even with scanners on doors, things can be snuck in in any fashion, an open ground floor window perhaps? emergency exits? a quick hit of the fire alarm, everyone troops outside you pick up your previously planted knife and troop in again unlikely to be scanned? Sure it would be more difficult but getting rid of knifes no hope at all!!

Just kill the chavs. Far quicker and a permanent solution :p

Joking aside as posted above utterly impractical. Total waste of resources as well.

just let them get on with the violence tbh, chavs need to be gotten rid of, as long as they are pronounced DOA I dont have a problem with it as theres no strain put on our services :p

We did that, just plinking each other in the sixth form common room.

One mate got his confiscated by the bus driver once when he got it out on the bus.

The tool had brought a BB shotgun too

Ah, those were the days...

Non but my dad and friends are teachers. A lot of problems is down to parenting, especially for the trouble kids. The parents have the same attitude as the kids and threaten and assault teachers. No wonder the kids are like it.

Mostly I agree with this, the amouth of kids you see hitting and kicking their parents, and the parents just shout back constantly like they have no other way of communicating with them.

I think random search's with proper punishments would be a much better idea.

e.g. you are found with a 6inch knife -> you get the pleasure of stabbing yourself with all 6inches of your knife.
