Metal Gear Solid. The Phantom pain.

See this is the part I'm unsure of.

In daylight, I've been one side of chest high cover and a guard has been within touching distance on the other side, facing me. And I've not been spotted.

From that I got the impression that when using cover you could not be spotted. Because in that scenario, the guard would 100% have been able to see not only my head, but my shoulders and back too :p

I don't have a video of this but it shouldn't be hard to make one.

Well, difficult to say without a video, but yeah - there are two variables (keeping the exposed area of your "hidden" body constant). One is the "dreaminess" of the guard - some(not all though!) are damn near blind until alerted. The second being their alert state. If you knock on the wall to attract their attention then your sticking out limbs will be more likely to be seen compared to the same situation but with the guard being deep in his thoughts while on patrol :)
Best solution is to keep all of your body hidden behind cover, anything less and you are taking chances.

There are a TON of variables that decide how you are spotted, and to be honest, I don't think its broken at all.

First of all, if you had markers on you would be able to actually see their alertness bar fill, this helps you understand why they eventually see you.

There definitely is NOT a black and white 'you are in cover therefore not able to be detected' thing. I think they are using a very nice line of sight type system in this game.

Then you have to keep track on what camo you are wearing, what surface you are on, perhaps their rank is also important in determining their ability to see you...

In that video you posted, I knew you were about to get spotted, as mentioned you had your head exposed.

I've played 110 hours, tranquillised literally 1000's of guards and thought the stealth system was pretty good.

An 'E' rank soldier is going to spot you less easily than an A or S rank soldier.

20 hours here and I think the AI and overall stealth mechanics is some of the best in the genre. Probably THE best, together with Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory's.

When I said there were "2 variables" - I was oversimplifying of course. There are differently ranked soldiers, there are differences in weather, foliage, Snake's chosen camouflage, colours, time of the day... the list goes on and on. Imho cover system is gamey enough to be fun (not Arma3 style "realism" of being spotted behind bushes from several hundred yards) but still realistic enough to make the experience very immersive.

If you find the cover system frustrating, I'd recommend turning on the "enemy's suspicion" markers - you'll hear ominous music and will see white blur on the screen coming from the soldier that is about to spot you. That's how I played and, with the "see through the walls" soldier markings turned off, it was great fun and great atmosphere.

You get the "suspicious music" no matter what; markers and indicators can be off.

I have a challenge for you guys. Do the prisoner extraction in "Da Shago Kallai" without a single combat alert. I've tried it about 30 times now, and always get spotted.

There's about 20 soldiers in a small area. And scratch what I said about Snake being invincible. They've got shotgun soldiers in my game now, and they kind of "stun lock" you so that you can never get up or get away.

But yeah, try Da Shago Kallai prisoner break without being spotted at all. I just don't see how it's possible.

I want to do a clean install and upgrade with Windows. Does Steam save my TPP save files to the cloud so I can reinstall Steam/TPP and can continue where I left off?

Something's wrong with his guards. They aren't spotting him at point blank range? That's ****ed up. There is no way in hell I wouldn't get spotted doing that. When he scales the wall he walks right past 3 guards in board daylight. That's not going to happen. And when he escapes (again broad daylight) he gets spotted at about 15m but they don't shout "hostile"....

I'm sorry but he's cheating somehow. You can't walk right past guards like that. In daylight. No way.

In my game they spot me at 50m in daylight!! Either he's cheating or my game is fubar.

To be honest... nothing about his game seemed abnormal to me. When he scales the wall he only goes past one actual guard and he never walks in front of him, just to the side.

This might sound a bit harsh but I think you don't fully understand the stealth system mechanics just yet. The more you play the more you will get it.

I took up your challenge last night, youtube has only just finished processing.

For context, I turned off markers just to make things tricky for myself, went in without any buddy and this was the first run I did. I also have never tried to play without markers before. I also haven't really played this game for months...

Its not a smooth run, but I did it (excuse my stupid face popping up for a few second at the beginning, as well as the game taking a long time to actually start!). It is definitely possible. I also did it with a relatively early game loadout.

(turns out I took the same path as the guy in the video, which I didn't watch before hand... as with much in MSGV, I just made it up as I went along and decided that seeing if I could scale the wall was the best option.)

To add to the reply above, at least one of the guards on the wall was a blow up decoy doll, not a real guard :) You can see them if you look carefully.

Oh and it definitely adds a lot to play without markers in terms of realism.. I just don't think its a good way to learn to play the game. More for new game + type stuff.

Seriously, you gain so much information its not even funny. I struggle to see how you could think markers are a hindrance.

Erm... you killed people with a sniper rifle! That's not stealth :p I said earlier in the thread that I could go through the levels perfectly easily by mass murdering the guards.

That is not stealth.

To beat this challenge you must get the "perfect stealth" achievement at the end of the mission. No kills, no alerts. Them's the rules.

e: wtf, non-lethal sniper rifle? I've got nothing like that. That a mod?

You can upgrade your weapons and items.

Must be much, much later in the game, then.

That side-op is available after mission 5 or something, which is where I am. Yeah, 40 hours in now, and only just past mission 5 :p I keep failing them over, and over (and over...)

Also when do you get fake guards? I've never seen one.

Depends how much time you spend building mother base up and gathering resources which in turn helps with R&D. I recall I had the tranq sniper before starting mission 4 by building mother base up.

I actually found the silent pistol which knocked people out more useful initially. May be worth a try. Usually pistol headshot them. Carry them off and extract.

You are very early in the game. You will learn more about how it works as you play but trust me, the stealth system is not broken.

Okay challenge accepted. No weapons, no alerts. I won't even cqc guards. ;)

Expect a video up Wednesday, don't have a chance to play until then.
