Metro Last Light - Thread

You can download the Metro 2033 novel / book (not the comic) for free from Steam if you use a US VPN, for some reason the book was only made available to US Steam customers. Here's the store link: http://store.steampowered.com/app/43163/

Now that is something that Steam do, apparently, get funny about. I wouldn't do that. It's one thing unlocking the game early another to obtain extra stuff by deception.

The reason only US customers get the book is that the author self publishes the book in the US (My guess is no US publisher would take the risk of publishing an obviously Russian author, because OMG! commies, but that is pure speculation on my part.) and has given permission for this. Over here where the book has an actual publisher, this permission has not been given.

Maybe, but if I went on holiday to the US with my laptop, logged in to Steam, I could then download the novel without a VPN. Once it's downloaded it's stored on your PC and steam isn't required to open it.

How would they know any different if I was using a VPN or actually in the US?

Do you have a US credit card?

All I know is what I've read, which is that they don't like people doing that, and people have been banned for it.

And by not actually being in the US when you make the purchase you are obtaining that book by deception, i.e. could be seen as fraud.

It's a whole different league to just unlocking a legitimately purchased game a few days early.

Be careful.

Isn't that the point of a VPN, there's no way of telling if I'm actually in the country or using a VPN??!!??? My IP address would appear to be a US one at Steam.

If you use a VPN and you pay with an American credit card registered to an American address then yes you are unlikely to be detected, but you're missing the point.

Although you are pretending to be in the US, you are not actually in the US and so are not entitled to receive that book for free.

It's a whole different league to unlocking the game you are entitled to a couple of days earlier, and one that Steam, apparently, do actually ban for.

You may as well just pirate it, at least that wont put your steam account at risk.

Most of the reviews I've read say the English translation of the book isn't very good anyway, also if you buy in the US now it wont be a pre order, so no ranger mode.

I'm trying to find out how many DLC missions are planned and what other DLC's Deep Silver will bring out. It will be interesting to see sales figures and whether this game could have saved THQ.

One thing I can tell you for certain though is that for the next Metro game there will be better pre-order incentives and none of this stripping difficulty settings BS. ;)

Is it best to play 2033 first or no?

The opening sequence does a reasonably good job of explaining the important bits, but I'm not sure how much some bits will make sense, particularly around the dark ones.

Given that the first game is now a tenner, and also gets you £3.50 off the cost of this game, making it an effective £6.50, you may as well play it first though. It's still a damn fine game that still holds up will in 2013.

Metro 2033 is £2.40 on GMG - use this voucher code: GMG20-GGN5D-FC3NA

I've had the first one since it came out, just not got round to playing more then half an hour of it.
I guess I should go back & do that one first.

It's just hard to do because I redeemed my LL code so want to play it when it unlocks lol :D

i have done a couple of videos and some screenshots on my site if anyone is interested in seeing the game .
