MG ZR - Opinions

Not a bad car reliability wise, they ARE different to the 25 but a 25 Sport would probably sum it up well :p

At current prices, they are a good deal. Just expect the odd bit of trim to decide it wants to sit on the floor and not where it's meant to!

I'd look at a ZS120 or 180, much better cars IMO.

Edit: Re insurance, I pay less on my 620ti than I would on a ZR120.

ZR160 makes a great track day car with a little bit of weight loss and fine tuning :)

I know a few who have raced them, very competitive against things like DC5 Integras which might surprise a few.

Id have a 200 BRM instead, better interior, same handling, better gearbox - close ratio(only K series to come with a LSD) and limited edition so potentially hold value..... These are a standard VVC engine, so 143bhp.

The final drive used in the BRM is longer than that used in the Vi, but the ratios are identical and can more recently be found in many Lotus products :)

^ Indeed, but he did ask about the ZR.

Here's a pic of my ZR.

It's quite common to put the 2.0 turbo into a ZR, not that I would ever consider it.

It would have to be the ZS for me or ZR CDTi.

The K series is a ticking time bomb - a costly one at that.

*facepalm*

Are you aware of the ZS180's common faults? VIS valves, £55 each to replace and the Inlet Plenum tends to go at around 60k - £450 to replace, that is more than fixing HGF. As for the ZR Diesel, I'd gladly shell out £300 for Head Gasket to not have a Diesel ZR.

The ZS doesn't have the ticking time bomb K series and it's a nicer car.

The K Series eventually will give up the ghost because it's not the type of car people treat with respect. It's designed to be thraped yet the engine is about as solid as a chocolate fire guard.

ZR diesel is the BMW engine is it not?

The ZS DOES have the K series. 1.4 (Ireland only), 1.6 and 1.8 variants were in the ZS. What engine did you think it was?

The ZR diesel is a Rover L-Series engine, NOT the BMW CDTi engine.

You can say the same for ANY car. The engine isn't designed to be thrashed everywhere?!

The plenum doesn't go at 60k, but the design of the plenum and the VIS valve arrangement is a sizeable issue in my opinion. A catch tank fitted early in its life sorts the issues of oil contamination though, and if the solder on the VIS valves is beefed up that sorts them. The VIS valves have doubled in price btw, they're now closer to £90 a pop.

Clutch slave cylinder is also a weak point in the ZS 180. Cambelt change at 6 years/90k is very expensive. Overall, it is a great car though and the KV6 engine is very nice. It's a helluva car for the money - probably half the price of a CTR.
