My vote will always go for a K series if you're after a standard ZR, IMO the diesel is totally unsuited to the car. Heavy, unresponsive etc.
The K is a cracking engine, if you look after it, it needn't be a ticking timebomb. Several people on MG-Rover.org have K series engines on their original gasket at over 100,000 miles.
Really would look at a ZS180 however.... and an uprated clutch hydraulics kit is available from someone on MG-Rover.org if you do run into issues.
