The risk would be that the tyres deteriorate as those behind catch up and he would lose more places. Of course it turned out well for him, I expected him to do an Albon.

Well, it isnt much of a risk. As soon as he could feel them dropping off badly he could pit. He had nothing to lose staying out until the very last moment.

He never had a comfortable gap to Ocon to stay ahead, staying out was less of a risk than pitting because he would have fresher tyres to overtake the longer he stayed out.

Caught up, somehow managed to avoid spoilers too.

Good race for Max, Russell, and Albon. Hamilton was unlucky but had a much better weekend than of late. Sainz will be releaved to finish at all.

Feel for Mick. He was better than his teammate for once, then lost it so close to the end. Still, it's a big step forward.

AlphaTauri had a terrible race, and Latifi continues his dire streak.

Track was okay, nothing special, and unsuited to these barges but complex changes in elevation induced mistakes from a lot of drivers making it all a bit more interesting.

First race since Abu Dhabi 2021 that Latifi hasn’t caused a red flag.

I was starting to think he’d started something that would rival The Undertaker’s wrestlemania streak :D

Weird how Leclerc dropped off loads before the safety car, but then could keep on Max's tail for quite a while after.

Leclerc said his car was better at getting heat into the tyres so he was faster at the start and after the safety car, but couldn't keep it in the performance window for the tyres as long so as the stint wore on, the advantage shifted to Max.

Bottas ended up ****** it in the race as usual. No surprise there.

Bottas had yet another good result from an ordinary car. A small mistake that - maybe - cost him a place (although probably didn't, tbh) doesn't mean he had a bad race. Great quali from him, good pace through the race, and a decent result. He's been quietly impressive all season. Only in Jeddah has he not been in the points, and that was a technical failure not anything he did wrong.

You see, I'm not so sure the Alfa is "ordinary". Bottas' race pace when in the same car was generally well off Lewis.

I mean, objectively Lewis is the faster and better driver. This was proven season after season with Merc.

It would therefore stand to reason that possibly the Alfa is at least as good as the Merc.

Very entertaining race, Russell pulled a blinder, Verstappen seems to be a much more mature driver after winning a WC and gutted for Norris. What on earth was Gasly thinking by coming back onto the track with a wounded car then meander in the middle of the track?
Schumacher needs to up his game..

Yeah Verstappen seems to have grown up a bit so far this year, we haven't seen any of the stupid over-taking/barging past that we did last year.
Agree on Schumacher although it was the first weekend where he genuinely seemed to have the pace of Magnussen (Until the crash) so hopefully a better omen going forward for him.

I think I'd go a long with most of that, perhaps backed up by Zhou having a stronger start than many expected (though still usually well off Bottas). Still, many in the paddock state Bottas looks much happier and relaxed than he has in the last few seasons, so I think we should give Bottas some credit too.

They just need to cut out dodgy pitstops. They've had so many this season (Miami one of the few they didn't). Bottas's error to let the Mercedes through was costly, but also extremely common all weekend. You got even slightly wide and it was like being on a wet track.

I'd agree - I think that Alfa is a very good car - its probably flattering Zhou a little as well, although after his good start he's had some fairly anonymous races since.
Its clear that the midfield is very close (McLaren, Merc, Alfa, Alpine, Haas) probably with Aston and Williams sitting behind that pace wise.

I'd say the current state of the teams is something like Ferrari=RedBull >> Mercedes > McLaren > Alpine=Alfa=AlphaTauri > Haas > Aston=Williams

Haas might be a bit better than that, but I think they were flattered by a great result for KMag in Bahrain, otherwise they've seemed weak. McLaren seem very variable, strong at some tracks, nowhere at others, which makes them hard to place. I don't see anything to suggest that Alfa is up there with Merc or McLaren and they seem much closer to Alpine and Alpha.

You don't see anything to suggest the Alfa is up there with Mclaren, even though Bottas has out qualified both Mclaren's in 3 out of the 5 races so far? He has also outqualified both Mercs in two out of the three.

Considering I would rate Russell, Norris and Hamilton as better than him, this demonstrates the Alfa is very good.

It's only because Zhou has only scored one point that they are not above Mclaren in the standings. I'm certain that if they had a more established/better driver in the other Alfa, they would be a solid 4th in the constructors right now.

What a great race so happy to see Max dominating. Hamilton should retire lmao
We'll see what he does in the next 2 races where straight line speed doesnt give as much advantage and Ferrari car being good at corners and maybe upgrades , no chance Hamilton will retire pretty sure he'll be back

If your definition of a great race is the person you prefer winning, well then that says a lot about what you get enjoyment from. If it wasn't for the safety car it would have been another bore fest, who cares who wins if there is no excitement in the race. They could literally replace the drivers with clones of a single person, to illustrate the point, the race would have had the same amount of excitement. I mean fair enough if you are a 12 year old and you don't get the "sport" yet, you just want to cheer on a flag, or a goody or baddy.

So yeah, boring race, last few laps saved it 4/10.

I wouldn't say a bore fest. There was plenty of good racing and overtaking, though most of it was missed by the TV director. It did get a bit static in the middle with DRS trains, but still, I enjoyed the race more than most it appears, looking at the poll. It certainly wasn't a good race, but I'd say if that was a bore fest then you're probably a fair weather fan.

You voted it a 4, which makes it near enough average more than bore fest.
