The post race interviews. Just lol.

Race was meh. Was hoping for better both in terms of racing and people going off.

Not that I wish anyone harm but I like the jeapordy it brings when things get mixed up.

Seems they haven’t fixed DRS trains so after 5 races or so and with totally overhauled aero and rules, the races are essentially reflecting what they used to be under the old regs.

Shame as I liked the track and hoped it would have some good racing.

Race was 4/10 for me. Knocked it down to 3/10 because of the ridiculous interviews and OTT American “media” style. Whoo hoo baby, USA!!!! Yeah!!!!
What’s funny is that Miami while technically is an American state is by no means an American state if you know what i mean.

I been there before and it doesnt have an American vibe to it at all.

Infact most people there speak Spanish and the culture there is definitely not american

Did he really though? Wasn’t he P5 and made the one mistake to let Lewis and George through? I can’t remember..

Yes. So he ***** it and lost two places.

(I will say Russell likely would have got him being on fresh mediums anyway though)

Interestingly, Russell might have struggled more to get past Lewis though had Bottas not made the mistake, as Lewis might have been to get DRS off him.

Still, it was a bad error at a crucial time and lost him at least one, if not two places.

Lewis is going to start getting some sort of mental break/complex with safety cars if one doesn't go his way soon. He's had absolutely absurd bad luck with safety car timings/situations recently.

"Lewis there was a safety car...and now once again your main competitor is on fresh, softer tyres and right behind you on the restart"...

"Arghhhhhhhhhhhh!"
He needs to start making decisions himself. He was twice given option to go on fresh tires and instead cried he doesn't know what to do. Don't think he was even going to drop many places if he took the first chance and would have been on fresh softs

I did sigh at Lewis when I heard him on the radio, he was coming across as fed up and a little petulant.

Did you even watch the race?

There is nothing Lewis could have realistically done once the crash happened. He likely would have end up 7th behind Bottas if he stopped.

Russell had not stopped yet due to Merc splitting the strategy so , he was always going to come out on top should the safety car come out when it did.

He didn't have any fresh softs available. The team should've been able to see pitting for some scrubbed tyres was the sensible option but the Mercedes pitwall have been suspect for years.

James Vowles is stealing a living. Compare to the Red Bull pit wall it's just pure amateur hour over at Mercedes.

I understand expecting a driver to make calls based on tyre condition and weather status but expecting them to make a decision based on something they don't have all the information on is a bit absurd. That is what the pit wall are there for, if you can't rely on them to give you a decent strategy, what is the point of them being there?

How would that have put him in front of Russell?

He would've still come out behind George but at least the softer tyres he had available - I think it was scrubbed softs, maybe mediums - would've given him a better chance of fighting George a bit more than the 20 odd lap old Hards.

Well, that was dull.

I thought Mercedes had screwed up massively by not bringing Hamilton in for tyres but actually in hindsight the fresh tyres didn't make that much difference, see Perez and Ocon, Russell improved but it wasn't like it was ridiculously easy, Hamilton could fight a little bit still.

Overall though, meh.

I don't think the straight line speed, or lack of, will always hurt Ferrari if they can keep qualifying well. Next race at Barcelona for example it shouldn't really be a problem, and actually could help Mercedes a bit although I still don't expect them to be fighting the Ferrari and RB's.

Moderately entertaining race at the new Dollar General Monaco (Yanks don’t have Poundland).

Track surface and several corners did look like Edmonton B&Q Carpark.

Any news on what was up with Perez‘s car? It definitely didn’t have its early pace later in the race.

I did. So worst case he was gonna finish exactly where he would have had Bottas not make the mistake

Doubtful. He would have been behind Russell who would get DRS off Bottas. Even if they both got past Bottas, any advantage the scrubbed softs may have had (possibly none) likely would be gone.

It was the same situation as the last race of last season. There are no good choices. You either risk track position or gamble on being able to get back ahead.

It was just **** luck again , with little he could do about it.

Not really. He still gives up track position with little hope of getting it back. You also add the risk of something going wrong in the pits too.

There was realistically no strategy call that would have put Lewis higher than 6th/7th (and ahead of Russell) once that crash happened.

Remember it was a vsc first for a while also, so even more potential risk for him to lose places (I can't remember the timings, but it's possible pitting under the vsc may have put him behind more cars than just Russell)

I don't necessarily disagree with that but lately he chooses not to make calls on pit strategy and then complains about others not making decisions for him. Going on fresh(er) tires would at least give him chance on the track which as a racing driver you'd think he would prefer to have.

I dont think it's as simple as that. He just objectively gets left with two ***** options, and it's just a roll of the dice as to which one works out. Maybe he thought he would have drs from Bottas to keep him ahead of Russell? Which was working....until Bottas screwed the pooch.

I think there is only so much he can be expected to make calls on based on the information he knows. If he can't rely on his team to make a call then why even bother talking to them at all?

The biggest strategy blunder was possibly Leclerc not pitting under the safety car. They didn't have anything to lose and could have pulled on Max, what Max pulled on Lewis on the last race of last season.

Not totally sure if he had passed the pit lane entry or not though (if so, maybe Sainz could have given it a go and gone on fresh softs).

Again though, it's gambling track position for pace, but I think they should have risked it as they almost certainly would have been back in p2/p3.

Don't think they had to worry about Perez as he was down on power (hence why he couldn't get past Sainz on the fresher tyre).
