Microsoft admits hardware issue

Thanks, whats are the bad / good drives?
I didn't know there was any bad drives, just faulty ones.

Personally both of mine have been Hitachi-LG and they work fine, no disc scratching at all. :)

I think this is a great gesture on MS' part, they didn't have to do it. It just shows that they're in this console race for the long-term and are doing what they can to keep its customers happy.

I'd still be wary of getting one for two reasons. One, the disc scratching issue which seems to be pretty widespread, which isn't covered by the longer warranty. Two, despite what MS have said, it is unclear whether the consoles currently being produced have had the red light issues fixed by an improved design or manufacturing process. So I might still be buying a very unreliable console and have the hassle of getting it repaired, which whether free or not is still a huge pain.

Oh and I don't think they deserve much kudos for this because as has been said - they HAD to do this or face an inevitable massive lawsuit. Their PR machine is putting a positive spin on it but we should not believe that they are suddenly the consumer's friend because their disgusting attitude for the last 18 months proves that they are not. And their continuing attitude to the disc scratching issue.

Good on MS for doing this. In all honesty, even if they were inevitably going to face a huge lawsuit, how many companies do we know of that would have rather faced the lawsuit and settle quietly than actually admit they were wrong in the first place? It takes a huge amount of guts to do that and for such a massive company, it was never an easy task. You have to give credit where credit is due.

I've had my 360 since just after launch, and it is still ok (touch wood) but it was a concern that if my 360 broke that it would be costly to repair / replace. I don't believe in extended warranties, waste of time and money if you ask me, but this is a nice gesture from MS and it certainly wasn't expected of them.

Again, nice one MS for showing face and proving you really are just as good as you say you are.

About 2 weeks too late for me, my 360 died with 3 red lights, I phoned them up and they said that'll be £85 please. I told them to stick it. They was quoting 5 weeks for the repear and that's not on either.

I went out and bought a new 360 with a 3 year extended warentee at £300 or so. I then proceeded to take the old 360 apart just to have a look, I took all the heatsinks off as well. I then put the motherboard in the oven at 100 degrees C for 2 hours, put it all back together and it works like new. I've been playing it for the last 2 weeks fine, how long it'll last is another thing, I've got the new one spare.

So I'm quite cheesed off this wasn't announced 2 weeks ago!

I have a Hitachi drive which has worked well thus far as has my console (Jan 06 and still going strong).

Like everyone else am in shock and admiration but also a bit disappointed its taken them so long to pull their fingers out.

Its nice to know i've now got 29months+ warranty on a product known for failure, i'm looking at my little white box in a different light right now.

I also was considering doing a trade in and getting a PS3, i probably won't be doing that now.

How annoying. I had the 3 red lights 1 month after my warranty expired so i sent it to a place in scotland to have it repaired. It turned out to be beyond repair so I had no choice but to sell it for spare parts (about £45). I can't help feeling i should be compensated for this is some way

It's all about cost. It's obviously gotten to a point now where it's not so expensive for Microsoft to be fixing them.

mine no longer has 3 red lights just crashes after 5min of play during darkness.every time. all the time.

Sending it of any way....

Mine does that to, But once i restart its fine and wont crash for hours.

I let mine run for ten minutes before playing the game just to warm the heatsinks up hehe, Doesnt crash then!

This has probably been asked, but if I buy one now I assume it's covered? Was talking to a competitor's rep and they said to phone Microsoft but I'm tired of listening to Nelly Feat. Kelly Roland - Dilemma
