Microsoft buying Activision (World of Warcraft, Call of Duty etc)

O_O If a Corporation doesn't keep growing and increasing their price then in the eyes of shareholders they have failed. You also need to be completely ******* incompetent at your job as Head Of Sony Entertainment division not to react to this market grab from Microsoft.

You're telling me if Sony doesn't spend billions to purchase the left over big companies they won't increase their share price by any other means? If so, you need to stop being dramatic man. So many people here seem to know absolute certainties in an unknown market based on little information. Perhaps subscription services are growing in popularity, perhaps it will be the next big thing we all use. It doesn't automatically mean companies need to be bought, there are alternative business decisions that can be made.

Some of the resident OcUK experts should be dropping off their CV's or giving them a call. I'm sure they'll appreciate some of the expert knowledge that's being wasted round here.

There's no guarantee buying up companies will lead to success, Blizzard has been successful from a financial PoV due to microtransactions, they don't have a good public image for a lot of reasons, nobody looks at their game releases as the next big thing anymore. EA has bought tons of game companies that don't exist today. My point is buying up big business isn't going to automatically lead to success that some of you clearly think will.

cheap subscription vs paying 50+ for a game most people will be bored of within 12-48hours of playtime.

I don't personally use subscription services, that isn't me saying yeah they aren't successful, it's me saying subscription services aren't the absolute future when they've been around for many years already.

If we wait 3 mths games are a tiny fraction of the RRP.

pretty sure that's not the case any more for almost any triple A title

subscription services have hardly been around for many years already when it comes to gaming.

especially any that actually had value like Gamepass does.

what other ones were they? and how much value for money did you get

Generally speaking a large group of people think of Gamepass around here for the £1 sub trick. This isn't going to last forever.

EA Plus has been around since 2014, PS Now since 2014 Gamepass 2017. Their older than you think.

I agree, I got a ps5 at Christmas and I've bought ratchet and clank, which I believe has been out a year. 30 quid second hand is what I paid:eek:.

Sony will struggle to come anywhere close to matching Microsoft on volume. I remember a quote a while back where they (I think it was Spencer) said they want to hit one release a month. The Activision deal brings them to around 30 studios. Some of those studios have multiple teams. Add in games which are contracted out, and there could easily be 40-50 games in development at any one time. So one release a month is quite plausible. Imagine a 2025 release calendar which had the following:
  • Forza
  • Fable
  • StarCraft
  • Gears
  • Age of Empires 5
  • The Outer Worlds 2
  • Perfect Dark
  • Call of Duty
  • Project Mara
  • Broken Age 2
  • a new Wolfenstein
  • Compulsion Games' new project.
Quality is a different matter though :p

yea but even if it's 9.99 or whatever it's still good value.

pay 50 on release and be bored of a single game within a few days or 5 months of game pass for the same price etc

why would you buy a game?

It's good value if you use it to get your moneys worth. Thankfully we have more than the 2 choices you've given as neither works for me.

A lot of folks will sub to Gamepass for £1 and play Halo campaign and unsub after their done a few weeks later, that's better value than buying it on release at RRP if you're not going to replay it again.

I often purchase games with a ton of replayability that often lasts hundreds of hours, therefore purchasing at whatever cost will benefit me over a £10 monthly fee.

Even the leaks of Spartacus paint a picture of a service that's much inferior to gamepass.

Microsoft is playing a long game here - Sony still has the mindshare from last gen to lean on, but I can foresee Sony being in real trouble come next gen

It’s very typical of Japanese businesses to resist change.

Will still happily pay £10 a month, best gaming purchase I've made in a long long time. The vfm I've gotten so far has been incredible.

Well look at the last few posts after yours. It's all doom and gloom for sony
The next Sega for sure.

what are they going to launch a new console with a catalogue of like 5 games like the golden days, I guess they can cry about MSFT having an unfair monopoly and not releasing games for our system is unfair since MSFT are buying all the devs.

For sure?

It's on offer occasionally. Tesco had it for £25 during Black Friday last year.
Oh I know, I ordered it from testosterone but then ran out:mad:. It's quite typical of the pricing imo. Traditionally it used to be Activision games that stayed expensive compared to everyone else, but now they all seem to stay high.
