**** Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Thread ****

Seems bright blue type cover is now available.

Going to get that instead of a replacement teal.

Got Teal in the end from John Lewis, after the Misco mess. Really great upgrade over the Type Cover 3. Nice and solid and love the new track pad.

Type cover seems to get the most radical improvements each generation, Microsoft have done a great job this time.

My DecalGirl skin arrived, but I finally had a chance to have a proper look at my new i7 Surface Pro 4 and there are two very visible dead/stuck pixels on websites with white backgrounds (i.e most of them!) so it's going back.

At least Microsoft provide a pre-paid return label.

Looks like JL have the i7 models online now but will try to pick up a replacement today in store today if I can. They also provide a 2 year warranty as standard with £130 (on the i7 models) to upgrade to a 3 year including accidental damage cover (no excess)

Oh dear, just got off the phone with Microsoft. Turns out that despite what I was told by their European call centre when I pre-ordered the SP4, they cannot add the Microsoft Complete extended warranty unless it is purchased in the same order as the device. Unfortunately the appropriate Microsoft Complete product wasn't actually available in their system when I pre-ordered and they told me I could buy it within a week or two of the device being shipped. Turns out that was a lie.

If I want Complete, I need to return and re-purchase the SP4 :( :( :(
As far as I know you can add complete up to 45 days post purchase - give them another call and hopefully speak to someone sensible.

Half way down this page although it does mention taking it to the store - I'd still argue the point though.

I tried them a second time and they quoted the same policy, outside the US they are no longer allowed to add it post-purchase as it requires inspection of the device to ensure you haven't damaged it and then are trying to add Complete for accidental damage coverage.

In the end I've setup a return and today picked up another one from JL with their 3 year accidental damage coverage (£130 with no excess on claims). Lost my student discount with Microsoft which was a bit of a shame, so this way ends up being slightly more expensive but includes full coverage for 3 years rather than 2 with Complete.

It's about £100 off with student discount isn't it? So 3 year warranty has cost £230 then?

I'm only asking as I don't know if I should do it myself but it just works out a bit pricey.

With the student discount the i7/8GB/256GB is £1169.10, Complete is £150 (no student discount on this) and the excess on a claim is £50 so assuming you need to use it even once that's £200 and the coverage lasts 2 years from purchase. So if you assume one claim, then JL without the student discount (£1299 + £130) is £59.90 more for an additional third year of coverage.

There's no real right or wrong decision, my main issue was that the Microsoft store misled me at the point I pre-ordered about the ability to purchase Complete closer to the shipping date and on top of that I got a faulty device. So I decided I'd rather deal with JL even if it costs a bit more.

for basic web use, film watching, kindle reading, some office use (excel) will the basic 128,m3,4gb memory be enough

Absolutely, yes. The M3 model is fanless so stressing it continuously will definitely hurt the performance even more but for what you describe it will be perfectly adequate.

I'm pretty happy with the i7 Surface Pro 4 so far. No major issues although battery life could be a bit better. I haven't yet messed around with tweaks like undervolting yet.

Incoming Firmware Update:

Surface Pro 4 Firmware Update (v1.1.420.0) enhances stability with Surface Pro 4 Type Cover.

The Surface Pro 4 has had some issues in the past where removing the Type Cover and re-attaching causing problems with the mouse cursors and other modes for Continuum. Hopefully, this update addresses that issue.
