Microsoft Surface RT Priced

I'm waiting to see if work get these in. Really tempting to order now though.

Just noticed the SD slot. Makes the 64gb rather pointless?

Depends how much storage you need, surely? The Surface can take a 64GB microSD card, so the max storage for the 64GB model is 128GB rather than 96GB. I doubt many will buy it or need it, but it's there if people want it. Interestingly, it does mean you can buy a Surface with touch cover and 128GB of storage for less than the price of the 64GB iPad with a smart cover :D

If you want more space you would just buy more SD cards or use USB storage, surely? Chances are if you want more than 100GBs storage, then you are going to want lots more than 100GBs. If 100 isn't enough then chances are you will be taking a USB HDD around with you.

Not me personally. 128Gb would still need to be managed, but far less.
That extra 32Gb translates to about 10 extra films. So gives you much more choice.
In comparison 32Gb ipad gives me about 5film after the space for everything else is taken out. Doesn't give me much choice at all. More storage and least faff the better.

Says not here:

"If you have purchased a pre-order product, you will receive an additional email when your product becomes available. You will not be charged for pre-ordered products until the product is available."

Well the money is no longer in my account.

Nothing wrong with it as such, I just don't want it in something at this price.
There's better SOC's, Tegra 3 devices can be had at 160, seems bizarre I can't get something better at 400.

Near enough every tablet at this price point uses a Tegra3 processor, or one very very similar to it, it's the standard for this price and format.

I never said it wasn't suitable.
But it's available in 160 quid tablets, why would I want the same SOC in a 400 quid tablet?

You're not paying just for the SoC, you're paying for the rest of the tablet, and the software. Also, the £160 tablets won't use the same variant of the Tegra3 SoC, there's a few different iterations floating about.

Most of those doesn't sell, only thing doing well with a Tegra3 is the N7 and that's £199 for 32gb soon. I thought it was s4 for the longest time xD.

Cyan does look ridiculously sexy, tough choice. I think I might hold off on the tablet front until I see how well this gets supported. If it's going to be all about the apps then it'll need a good library to make me consider it over the App Store on iOS devices. Still... that cyan keyboard. :p

The App Store is small ATM, but roughly 100apps a day being added, ~4500 apps currently.

Loads of the big names have allready confirmed apps, or have apps released allready. Best things is to make a list of apps you want and see if they exist.

For example a few of the big names to allready confirm
Instagram
Angry birds
Audible
Netflix
Spotify
Splashtop
7digital (Spotify like company)
Firefox
Nook

One advantage Microsoft have is the excellent Visual Studio, and tons and tons of .NET developers.

Plus with Azure they have a decent platform for developers to host services on, overall its a much better supported system then Apple.

Then you can port existing code form Xbox or Windows.

So I think getting the devices into the hands of users cheaply enough is the biggest problem, the developers are already there.

Thanks for the info guys, as long as the main apps are there then that'll be enough for me. I use my iPhone mainly for the browser, Last.fm, Sky Sports News, BBC News, Amazon, Sky GO and some catch up services like 4OD and iPlayer. I'm imagining that the majority of those will be on the Windows Store if they aren't already on there right now, plus I'm expecting the browser to be nicer than the browser on the iPhone which I find to be a chore to navigate, maybe that's down to the small screen size though.

So they're going head on against Apple with virtually no brand value (I mean that in the sense that people just don't find MS a desirable product) and hardly any applications? This will flop.

If Windows 8 sells half as well as Windows 7 initially that'll be 50 million people in 6 months they can target apps to. That's a lot of people...

Did you read your receipt? Physical products coming from Ireland and Preorder now for delivery for 26/10.

If that's the case then it may be getting shipped pretty soon to make sure its with you for 26/10. Or is that me being stupidly optimistic :D

Couple of SD cards or a USB stick then.

Was hoping for a better SOC and a higher res screen.

I'll give it a miss I think.

This type of thing sits with the 3G stuff for me. Have you ever tried using a small device with a full HD screen? We recently got some 15" laptops at work with full HD screens and you have to turn the text size up to be able to use them. At standard everything is far to small to use comfortably.

If you had a full HD screen in a 10" device with this tablet OS then things would just be scaled to the same size as on a 720p screen. Its another one of those features that people seem to think they want, but in reality don't.

I imagine he'd want everything doubled a la iPad so it would still operate at 1336x768 but every on screen element, especially text would look pin sharp.
