Any tips on creating a power plan that sits between power saver and balanced for cpu usage?

Its for a desktop that is on all the time but on balanced it consumes more power than I'd like while on power saver it uses half the energy but limits performance a bit too much. A middle ground between the two would be perfect.

I don't see many options for performance in the advanced plan settings

Have a look at these custom plans, obviously only if you have a Zen4 chip

You'd probably have to use a balanced power plan then tweak BIOS level power management options such as C states, if your motherboard exposes them sufficiently, to get optimal results.

Tried the rgb control thingy. None of my peripherals supported. Lovely.

I guess it will be for future hardware. So something to keep in mind for my next build in a few years.

I still have my old Corsair mechanical keyboard that only has red back light keys from over 10 years ago. Sill works exactly like it did the day I got it, so zero reason to upgrade which is partly a shame

Did you try OpenRGB?

I'm hoping Win11 will be a good experience for me next week with my new PC build, I went with the Home version since I only game and do general browsing. What AV are you guys using ie Windows Defender or third party like Avast etc?..Also any other tips would be helpful.

:)

Thanks

It's an i7-10700T which only uses about 10w on idle in power saver but jumps to 50w in balanced, if I could get power saver to just boost performance a little bit more it would be perfect. At the moment its very reluctant to increase cpu speed but will eventually up it to meet demand.

I read about changing max CPU usage to 95% but I think that just disables Turbo Boost

RGB control is now available in Windows 11

However it does not work on any of my devices. After searching I found it's because currently only these devices are supported:

Keyboards

  • ASUS ROG Scope II Wireless 96 Gaming Keyboard
  • HyperX Alloy Origins Core
  • HyperX Alloy Origins 60

Mice

  • ASUS ROG Harpe Ace AimLab Edition Gaming Mouse

But it will get better. Microsoft is using the Lamp open source library for RGB control in Windows and is trying to get manufacturers to agree to make all their devices compatible going forward.
Logitech has agreed to make all its new devices compatible going forward, so has Razer, Asus, Steelseries, Twinkly, Acer and HyperX

Pop-up today when I started for "Microsoft PC Manager"...
So thankful they added that to my laptop, without asking. Users love pop-ups. Smashing.

Edit: Isn't appearing in my list of installed apps too.
Double edit: For anyone else, you must run the new program first for it to be properly installed, to allow for it to be uninstalled. An absolute masterclass in app design. Anyone who doesn’t think Windows 11 is top class, needs to give their head a shake.

This is in W11 23H2 isn't it, which isn't generally available yet?

If Asus are signed up for this that would be great for me, I really don't like the Armoury Crate software and don't install it, but I would really like the ability to adjust the RGB on my board etc, wonder if it will require a firmware update to enable it.

Main reason i avoid RGB like the plague is because the software is awful and i expect MS rolling that into Windows isn't going to change that, it will probably still have an install size in the hundreds of MB, it will probably still take-up unnecessary CPU cycles, it will probably still use hundreds of MB of RAM when running, and it will probably still have a clunky, convoluted, interface.

If you're running W11 pro you'll probably want to read this, the short of it is if you've got BitLocker enabled it maybe using software based encryption and slowing down your SSD by 45%.
If you want to check if BitLocker is enabled open a command prompt and type 'manage-bde -status'. If 'Conversion Status' doesn't say Fully Decrypted then you're using BitLocker and if 'Encryption Method' says 'XTS-AES' then you're using software based encryption and loosing performance.

Unfortunately disabling Bitlocker is not easy as it requires a fresh install and secularly erasing the drive via Windows 2 Go or another PC and generating a new block ID.

Just checked mine and its not enabled\in use

I pretty much straight up ditched Windows 11 after trying it on a couple of my systems but having built a new system for gaming thought I'd persist with it a bit more... what a hideous mess, Start Menu a complete abomination, after nearly getting to something good with 10, Settings a complete abomination and designed by a complete idiot, all the recommendations, etc. taking up screen estate and making things look messy.

Some of the tweaks to Explorer are actually decent, I don't personally use tabbed mode but that will be a nice QOL thing for some, but it still missing some useful features and having to do a dozen reg fixes just to get proper menus including context ones back, re-implement previews, etc. etc. is just crazy, lots of information views missing which Windows 7 and even to an extent 10 had and complex folder structures are nothing like as clear to quickly take in as Windows 7. While a couple of Windows 7 refresh bugs seem to have reared up again which they'd fixed in 10.

Updates implementation if anything is worse than 10 and the amount of stuff you have to tweak privacy wise, notifications wise and many things along those lines is getting ludicrous as well.

Task Manager also a big step backwards overall - a few good changes but overall just a mess compared to older iterations of the OS.

Windows 7 is just a way better OS, I've had to do several hours of low level tweaking, which I'll probably have to redo periodically with updates, to get back to something which is at the end of the day an approximation of Windows 7 (not intentional just how it ends up when you tweak things to what works) but less useful and more awkward than 7 to use.

W11 works fine for me. I just use it as it is and don't mess with it. Too much effort to tinker with things, I also don't put anything interesting on there that would be worth "phoning home" about. My browsing etc. is also split across various browsers and hardware platforms so good luck making any sense of that, probably explains the "odd" adverts I get

I don't tinker with it for the sake of it, only what is needed to make it actually useable for me - trying to use it as it is makes for a headache of features fighting against me just to do basic things, additional steps to get to things I use regularly, etc.

I usually just type into the search bar at the bottom and they pop up. What sort of things do you have trouble getting to?
