*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

Yep! What a load of you know what!

Been back on 10 to avoid nonsense like this. I just want to play/buy games without having MS taking snapshots of anything, let alone potential sensitive info that’s on my screen.
exactly and going by that link above it does not filter out sensitive info if its in a document\pdf

Exactly. This is why I won't be upgrading to the latest version of windows and unless they strip it out will eventually use windows for gaming only.

Wtf honestly. Recall... Who wants that!
I agree, Ive stayed on 23H2 purely for this reason.

I have to install Windows on a PC I am building which will be for internet and gaming. I'm either going to go back to W10 or move to Linux, undecided at the moment

I haven't used Windows in ages, but had some time for gaming lately, what a nightmare with windows updates rebooting my PC every hour no matter what I told it to do, ended up having to go and figure out which package it was and faff around with dism to remove it.

I would expect lots of updates on a new pc or one that hasn’t been turned on for a few months. It then settles down.

This is one of the things which annoys me - if you haven't used a device in a few months chances are you are turning it on to briefly check something or retrieve data, etc. you don't want or need it to launch into updates related activity immediately which often impacts performance.

Or like has happened now and again to me, though I usually leave these devices with Windows Update Blocker in effect now, where I've been unwell and just wanted to use an older laptop to watch some YouTube, etc. while lying down only for things to stall briefly every ~30 seconds due to Windows being busy with maintenance and updates tasks...

It feels like there is an increasing amount of narcissism involved in software development these days.

But without the updates you will be at a higher risk from malware etc. Blame the nasty people out there not the OS.

Yet other operating systems manage updates in a way which doesn't interrupt the user just fine.
iOS on my devices has regular updates that can affect my use if they aren’t left on. Less popular OS’s aren’t going to be targeted as much by the nasty folk. I’m not defending MS though as I don’t like the inconsistency of W11 updates/features.

A good start to the year for Windows 11:
In October 2024, Windows 11 reached its all-time high market share, climbing to over 35.5%, according to Statcounter. This increase followed an unexpected decline when the operating system had been losing users for three months. Now, the story repeats itself. After dropping some market share in November, Windows 11 is once again in decline.

Statcounter's latest data indicates that Windows 11 lost over 1.48% points in two consecutive months. In December 2024, the operating system went from 34.94% to 34.1% (-0.84 points). Windows 10, on the other hand, reclaimed some of its lost users, even though it will be out of mainstream support in less than eleven months.

By now, Windows 10 remains the dominant Microsoft release, with a market share of 62.73% (+0.9 points). It will be interesting to see what happens to it as we get closer to October 2025, considering that many users cannot update to Windows 11 and that Microsoft does not want to negotiate its steep hardware requirements, such as TPM 2.0.

If you cannot update officially and you do not want to buy a new device yet, you can opt for Microsoft's official Extended Security Program that grants 12 months of extra updates for $30 or use third-party solutions, such as 0patch, to get up to five years of additional support (also not free). Another option is to bypass Windows 11's hardware requirements with various tricks.

If Statcounter's latest data is to be believed (Microsoft does not offer official Windows market share data), here is what the Windows market currently looks like:
  1. Windows 10: 62.73% (+0.9 points)
  2. Windows 11: 34.1% (-0.84 points)
  3. Windows 7: 2.4% (-0.07 points)
  4. Windows 8.1: 0.29% (-0.02 points)
  5. Windows XP: 0.23% (-0.02 points)
Windows 11 market share drops again, Windows 10 climbs - Neowin

I'm on
win 11 for work
Win 10 on surface book (main machine)
Win 10 for desktop I rarely use, no tpm.

I will stick to win 10 as long as possible. Not a win 11 fan. Not being able to move task bar is a biggy for me as one example.

I will not be upgrading my desktop to so I'll either continue to run at risk win 10 or Linux. But tbh I'd rather not use Linux.
My Surface book? Not sure.

I think its horrendous that people are expected to just bin millions of PCs that are unsupported.

Still hope MS start supporting non tpm machines. They may have to with uptake of win 11.

StartAllBack has been updated with new taskbar features like floating taskbar and better height control. Looks nice segmented especially.

11 Pro to this day still running great.

As we reflect on the innovation and advancements of 2024, we are optimistic about the future and the potential that lies ahead in 2025 and beyond for computing and the Windows PC.

2024 will be remembered as a transformative year when many experienced the unique benefits of AI in practical application, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on a Windows PC at work, at school and at home. Whether it’s quick access to Copilot direct from your keyboard with the Copilot key, summarizing a meeting with Copilot in Teams, creating a document with just a few words with Copilot in Microsoft 365, or simplifying search with Improved Windows Search1, AI is revolutionizing how we use PCs today and in the future. And the best, most secure and most performant way to realize the benefits of AI today, and into the future, is with a new Windows 11 PC.

Is that so?

I caved and upgraded to Win 11. I should do a fresh install but cba! I will do a fresh install when I move to a new CPU but I'm not planning to get one this year.

Since I'd previously told Win 10 I didn't want Win 11 I couldn't find the option to upgrade anymore so I used the Windows 11 Install Assistant which assisted because it just went ahead and installed it lol. I'd gone through the upgrade process on a few machines at work now, this was easier if anything. It didn't ask me anything, just restarted to 11.

So far so good, uninstalled Taskbar Tweaker (doesn't support 11) and installed Windhawk and a few mods to tame the taskbar, notification icons, middle click close, also messing with the clock mod which is great as well.

Reinstalled/updated a few things, GPU driver, GPUZ wasn't happy so reinstalled, only item in device manager not working was something called 'usb/ip vhci' but unsure what this was, maybe a printer driver or Asustor related so updated that but still didn't work so uninstalled it in device manager and it hasn't come back soo erm fixed(?) :) AMD chipset drivers as they hadn't been upgraded for over a year. Windows updates, another restart.

Reviewed settings, privacy etc (all carried over), although maybe due to the XBOX app Windows already has my email info from that I think. Hotmail email address so they already own me!

My key (via a mate) for 10 Pro has carried over to 11 Pro.

I was been very busy over the last month build a desktop PC for my 16 years old niece to get it ready for xmas day. I charged my Surface Pro 6 tablet I had not used it for 12 months, I turned it on to checked internet to read ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI user manual, downloaded drivers, ran Microsoft Store immediately to updated all apps to latest version, ran Windows Update immediately to downloaded and installed 24H2 Feature Update. No performance impacted at all, Windows 11 ran smoothly with all background tasks running, it never stalled for a few or 30 seconds.

After finished tested niece PC with my old MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X installed then formatted, cleaned installed Windows 11 24H2 and shutdown at post setup screen on xmas eve. After xmas day I was busy upgraded my PC to 14700K, TITAN 240 RX LCD CPU cooler, ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming Wifi II and 128GB DDR5. Memory and CPU hogged Firefox now ran much better with 128GB RAM than my old 8700K and 32GB RAM did which always hitted 100% CPU load and 99% memory load. Firefox caused Windows 11 to stalled over the last 12 months due to shoddy Firefox development, old Firefox builds in 2023 was much better, something changed in Firefox 2024 builds caused my old 8700K to hitted 100% CPU load and used far too much memory than both Edge and Chrome. None of workarounds worked, tried cleared Data, uninstalled Firefox, deleted Firefox folders did not fixed it. Closed Firefox browser and relaunched browser worked everytime but CPU hitted 100% load again after a few hours. Firefox is absolutely nightmare for old CPUs and 32GB RAM. My niece did not know much about PC, said her laptop cant run games, wanted PC with graphic card and 32GB RAM, I told her 32GB RAM is not enough for Firefox in 2024 so I upgraded her PC with 64GB RAM, tested and it ran much better with Firefox than 32GB did.

It seemed there must be some narcissism third party software running on your PC caused Windows to stalled for 30 seconds. I would like see full list of apps you installed and ran. Maybe it could be Firefox browser?
