*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

Anyone found recently that Windows 11 is just not as responsive as it was? like clicking on simple things like closing menus or the start menu. (think a fresh install might be in order)

I really do dislike 11,Wish 10 could stick around for longer but even with say ltsc its only got so long.
I have noticed this definitely seems a bit slower.

They are doing a phased rollout at work and we noticed with an identical spec system side by side 10 is significantly faster at starting applications and overall more responsive though it is a bit swings and roundabouts as 10 seems to get a bit more bogged down by background activity. Though how much of that is specific to work I'm not sure as I've not seen much difference on my own systems, etc.

I’ve been back to Win 10 a couple of times since 11, and even though a fresh install of 10 feels clean and snappy in comparison to a ‘fresh’ install of a bloated windows 11, afraid to say that 11’s core OS is 10 just reskinned, with better security and some gui changes. And part of the kernel rewritten in Rust.

At this point, given how much longer 10 has, you’re better off with a debloated (there are many ways to debloat - just don’t touch Edge) fresh install of 11, and maybe some tweaks to some settings that tickle your fancy and you’re good to go.

Personally I’ve got my win 11 24h2 in a nice place and I’ve yet to experience performance issues.

W11 updates appear to have a significant effect on speeding up or slowing down actions and responsiveness in core apps such as file explorer and simply logging in. Simply leaving it and coming back can result in an improvement too.

I'm gonna create my own installer from a Win11LTSC iso I think and just go from there, most of the stuff I do I could probably run on Ubuntu or similar but there's a few games that are not Steam..

What are you going to use to create your on installer? Nlite\MSMG?

Anything that does that sort of thing tbh, didn't know nLite was still thing, used it a looooong time ago, most of the tools do pretty much the same thing.

Every update they put out Windows gets worse and more buggy. Explorer tabs randomly become unclickable, snip tool takes an age before you can start dragging for your screenshot, Word randomly decides it won’t open files/save out as PDFs.

It’s garbage, I personally feel, and continues to get worse. Oh well, at least we’ve got the extra useless Copilot bloatware to watch and screenshot everything we do!

They don't even need to slow it down. Just put obnoxious banners and full screen pages that require an accept or ok, every few hours, reminding users how broken and terrible Windows 10 is.
They've done it before, and it works.

Some of the features are locked behind the full license you need to buy but the free version can some stuff as well.

I don't 'dislike' Edge, to be honest. It's better now that it's Chomium based rather than whatever the hell it was when it first made an appearance in Windows 8.

I agree. Edge is now my primary browser. Fast, customisable, no extra shiz that I can't turn off, highly secure, built into the OS. Has good features, such as Drop which comes in so handy. An underrated feature imo.

So, while I'm sat here in Spa, I've had a quick play..

The stock Windows 11 LTSC iso is 4.72Gb
So I created an image with Tiny11, Tiny11 core and winutils "MicroWin"

Tiny11 is 5.01Gb
Tiny11Core is 2.68Gb
MicroWin is 4.66Gb

Not sure how Tiny11 made an image that's larger than the stock ISO...

Gonna spin a VM up now from Tiny11Core and see how broken it is, although to be fair the readme for it does say its designed for rapid deployment and VM etc..

It may not be the install or your machine. Not sure if it's still around, but the earlier Win 11 builds had delay timers on the menus and animations. For example, you click on a menu, and it would literally wait something like 100ms before animating. It's been a a while as I ditched windows, but there were things I changed in the registry and similar to reduce those times to make it feel more responsive.

I run most of my games on Ubuntu outside of Steam. Check out Lutris
