Microsoft Windows 8.2 Scheduled For January 2014

They go into suspended mode, so theres no need to close them.

Theyll use zeo cpu, un less you have them run in the background, but even thats heavily restricted.
They will sit in memory, however if windows detects memoory restraints, it will free up memory from suspended apps.

So there realy is no reason to close them.

Ok, thanks for that. I'll look at task manager on my laptop next time I use it and have a metro app or two open. :)

Multiple stories, maybe from the same source ?

Story 1, Story 2, Story 3

They'll probably switch the right click start button menu to the left click.

No, if they bring back the Start Menu, they'll leave the right click menu alone as a separate menu. (It's a Utilities menu, not a Start Menu.)

Hallelujah if true, otherwise meh. :p

I can see it happening though now that Ballmer has gone, Microsoft need to focus on what sells not some unpopular crusade to force Metro tiles into everything.

There's already been talk about scrapping/selling the Xbox division because it operates at a loss, scrapping Metro in Windows is pretty minor compared to that and it will probably boost Windows 8 sales tremendously.

Xbox is a hobby next to Windows. There is absolutely no way Metro is getting scrapped, fortunately or unfortunately depending on your POV.

It won't make a difference to sales. The general public don't go out and consciously buy Windows, it's what happens to come with whatever cheap plastic laptop is on offer that particular week.

i don't get what people love about the old start menu so much that they're missing from metro? seruiously someone tell me what they need to do on a start menu? the start menu literally just opened programs in a list style format, which is exactly what you get now, except you can make it so your favourite programs have a better easier to get to spot, and you less popular programs are just one swipe away.

what are people going to do with a start menu? it's like the users on this site are from mumsnet, they are on a computer but don't get how to use one.

I've only briefly used windows 8, so haven't had chance to get used to it, but I'm not convinced. I don't understand why there's a desktop AND a metro interface. To me, the metro interface should be the desktop if that's how it's moving forward. I just got frustrated and let someone else do the simple thing I wanted to do. Given time, I'm sure I'd get used to it, but didn't see how it would be quicker or better tbh. I'm happy with 7 as it stands :)

This is the first I've heard of it and for a major update like this not like Microsoft to keep quiet regarding it.

the reason there's a desktop AND a metro is because on the desktop your able to open more windows/programs and resize them plus older programs uses the desktop interfere. metro is a nice start menu because you can fit a lot more on it also able to run useful apps side by side of the desktop. just because metro is in mind for mobile devices doesn't mean desktops can't use it

but that's like saying why is there a desktop and a start menu in windows 7.

the metro start menu is just a fancy list start menu in windows 7, literally nothing is missing from the start menu of 7, however features are added.

you then have the metro apps which make sense when on a touch screen device, not as much on a desktop but that's fine you'll never use the metro apps if you don't want to. i have a surface pro 2 and i so rarely go into the desktop, but on my desktop i so rarely go into metro apps. which is fine and great as i know i have the function of both on both devices. it would annoy me not to. you only get more by having them together then if they were seperate.

Already answered in another thread:

I don't like the way the modern UI switches me away from what I'm using at that time. I like it to stay on the screen, which it does with the old Start Menu. Getting a list of programs just by pressing the windows key, while still having what I'm working on (or the windowed game I'm playing) up on the screen is the functionality I want, which is removed in Windows 8, unless you go third party.

Just so I don't have to repeat myself.

I don't mind the fact that the new Start Screen exists or was even brought out of Windows, it's the fact that they killed the old Start Menu without giving users the choice. Did they not have enough faith in their own product to let the users choose between them?

I think the 8.2 info is FUD,I'll be very surprised if anything appears that soon.

As linktoinsanity post above,as always choice is relative, was I given a choice to continue to use DOS in the old days?...No it was phased out for Windows but as we all know even Windows has changed/removed features etc over the decades, same goes for even Linux, end of the day ONLY REAL choice you have is to decide on what to buy.

I do think some of you guys are crying over "spilt milk",what is done is done so live with it and move on like I've.

An alternative view would be that they obviously had enough faith to leave it out. The ability to regress back to the old UI at the flick of a switch would hardly be a show of confidence.

What you do is make your new UI so good that people don't want to use the old one.

Easier said than done though really, not even Apple can achieve that with a hugely favourable user base and total control over hardware.

The worst is over. 8.1 is a good improvement, not perfect but much more palatable for your average consumer. The available hardware is drastically better than what was on offer 12 months ago.
