Microsoft Windows 8.2 Scheduled For January 2014

Seens far too early for an update. No issues with 8.1 here. Metro takes time to get used to but once you have it's actually quite nice to have day to day.

I kind of agree with this. I have used 8 for a year or so and found it okay. I have resorted to bringing back the start menu, but occasionally flick to the modern UI screen to check the weather :). Both are optional and usable so win win to me.

I did have to resort back to Windows 8, from 8.1 though. Probably permanently as I'm not keen on two things with 8.1, which are inlikley to be changed.

Mouse locked to 200mhz. What a stupid decision to lock it this low.
and
DPI scaling is plain broken. I use my 27" at 120% DPI which works perfectly on 8, but distorts some bitmaps on 8.1. Eg Firefox menu

I already tried classic shell, but I just don't like the feel of 8 and have no desire for live apps/widgets.

I note there is no official MS source. If it were to be released in Jan 14 it'll be going through final testing.

This is a load a crap IMO.

Curse you Microsoft!

Me: "Hmm... no sticker with Windows Key, guess that means I need to keep the recovery partitions. No worries, just format the main large partition and install Windows 7."
Windows 7 installer: "Cannot install Windows 7 on GPT partition."
Me: *googles* "The hell? Arg, much complicate! Screw this *restores Win8 from recovery*"

Looks like my gf will just have to get used to 8 with Classic Shell then. :p

According to this source

So far the unofficial Windows roadmap reveals that Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 will receive an update in Spring 2014 (v8.1.1?). This will also be the time when Microsoft releases the "Blue" update for Windows Phone, catching it up to v8.1. After that, Windows 8.1 will reportedly receive another big update in Fall 2014, v8.1.2 perhaps, around one year after Windows 8.1 originally went live.

Based on information provided by unnamed sources, Microsoft is planning to shift its major releases to the Spring. The "Threshold" update is likely similar to the "Blue" wave of updates, and is scheduled to take place in the Spring 2015 timeframe as previously mentioned. Included in this update is reportedly Windows 8.2, Windows Phone 8.2 and Xbox One.

Hi, if you want to install windows 7 on a windows 8 disk that is GPT you have to delete every partition on the disk, once it is back to one unallocated partition i think then you can install windows 7 on it.

I wouldn't expect much at all from the spring update, i bet that will just be updates for wp8.1 to sync etc.

Theres also an email talking about the next big windows release which is "due" in early 2015. That will be a big step forward in the unification process(one app store for windows, wp and xbone and one tool set to create said apps) Code named "Threshold"

If the old rumours are true that wp and winrt will be unified before the next big unification process. Then on that time scale it would really have to be spring. Leaving a year to unify the others.

Edit - Oh pretty much what your link says.

Maybe a little more information here...

Metro apps running in windows on the desktop. As you can today with third-party utilities such as ModernMix, the next version of Windows will let users optionally run Metro apps in floating windows on the desktop.

Start menu. After bringing back the Start button in Windows 8.1, Microsoft will take the next logical step in the next Windows version and make the Start menu available as an option. It's possible this will appear only on those product versions that support the desktop.

.....and others to be confirmed.

If any of the above has substance it will prove interesting, and I might no longer need to install the Classic Shell utility.

Letting Metro apps float around the desktop is like taking a turd sandwich and adding some salad cream to take the edge off it.

That Start screen looks awful Gareth. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if mine looked like that.

It reminds me of the days when I used to just let absolutely everything sit on the desktop and clutter the hell out of it.

I wonder if we could have resizable Metro screens. It would be interesting to see how Start Menu users would take to something Start Menu sized, but with live tiles.

Add good graphics drivers and gaming support and i'll happily move to Linux.

Microsoft seem to be happy to corner the PC gaming market but not happy to bother actually supporting it in any way.
