Middle aged life

I saw mentioned about the new inbetweeners movie and it stated that they are actually older than Mr Gilbert was in the original series who was 39. I always thought of him as an old bloke even back then and now I am older than that!

I wish I didn't read this.

To be fair, he looks waaaay older than 39 in that.

I hit 55 this year, so I am well past midlife unless AI somehow finds a way to cheaply extend the average human lifespan.

My crises consist of buying the latest GPU's that end in '90 and going on holiday - just came back from 4 weeks in Zanzibar/Nairobi :D
My younger sci-fi novel reading self once hoped that science would find an affordable way to greatly extend the human lifespan. Now I’m approaching 61, I’d settle for just another 20 reasonably healthy years.

I'm finding the mid 50's little fun really. Lots of family and friends dying and less and less people to train with or go for a drink. It's all very drudgy.

Like weddings or buses. None for ages then a load together. Some times you've got to reimagine or reinvente your future.

No reason why you can't live to be 100 and still be OK. Especially with all the miracles of modern science we have now. If it wasn't for that some of you would have died and gone along time ago. Never mind having a mid life crisis

I'm friendly with a guy in the gym I go to. He is 76yo and objectively speaking looks about 50. Tells me he's been working out for 50+ years and still feel as fit as a 25yo. Kinda wonder if those are the guys that's going to look great until 85-90 and just suddenly one day keel over from a heart attack.

Can happen at any age, just like being taken out by a form of stage 4 cancer.

41, still try and do all that I could 20 years ago, gym 5 days a week, running and cycling, which I can about manage, just with far more aches and pains after, as to hobbies/interest, I've never really been a social sort, I'm far happier at home relaxing in the cave than in a pub (Eg, works Christmas night do, flight out to Belfast, back home the day after, the lads will no doubt get hammered, I'll be trying to find a cup of tea throughout the night) I guess I've become even more boring, or perhaps being that much older, I've less inclination to do stuff I don't actually want to do.

Me in a nutshell.

I am 53 and have 5 years to mandatory retirement from the career I am in, when I will have to move back to my house, which I havent lived in for 15 years, I wont know anyone and will be over 3 hours away from everyone i know now. Kids are still young but last one will be 18 in 8 years.....then I will be able to decide on what I want next from life (and they can have the choice to join me or not!!). I'll probably have to rent down here (south)for 3 years to finish schooling which will wipe out a fair portion of the savings, but needs must.

Its all starting to feel quite close and making me think about what is my mid life transition plan..

So, to soften the transition I am starting a new hobby, away from work (sort of), which is Land Rovers - hope to build up a new set of friends that I can meet at shows etc, and travel the country in the old beast....I thought about campers, boats etc but as I get older my thoughts were that I'd really ony have 10-15 years of being able to do things physical, whilst boats and campers (already have an old motorhome) and Land Rovers will allow me to still keep the house whilst enjoying something new.

Not the best plan, but at least its a start..

I turned 42 last month, I've just had an experience that probably ruined a lads life and made me happier than I've been in months.

Went out to pick up a delivery and it's a bloke I know in passing that's on the chubby side, we got to chatting as you might expect and he mentioned his upcoming birthday.

To paraphrase:

Me: Aye? I've just had mine mate, make the most of it! Getting old.
Him: How old are you "like"?
Me: 42.
Him: Many eff words, followed by "I thought you were the same age as me! I'm (insert further f bombs) 28!"
Me: Really? My god. . . Well, thanks!"

He went on his way after that, I've been cackling like an idiot ever since. Don't get me wrong, I look like the wrong end of a horse and very much my age, hopefully I just gave the silly bugger a wake up call.

Sunbeds....you sure thats not Gen X!?!? :D I remember them being a thing in the 90's.

I legit thought he was a few years older than I am.

Keep seeing it lately, my niece is in her late 20's and her best friend looks like she's knocking on 50.

You say that but Gen Z are the ones who are drinking, smoking less and looking after their health more because of social media. So many of them are vegetarian or vegans.
