***Midweek Football***(Spoilers within)

Ronaldo and Wenger have both said themselves that Ronaldo had agreed to go to Arsenal before Man Utd offered 3x as much or something, so it's not really that far fetched. If both of them are lying it would be awfully odd (I may have got this slightly wrong it was a while ago)

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-how-close-we-came-to-signing-ronaldo

All that article claims is that he was shown round the training ground that doesn't really mean anything was close, not a fee with sporting, nor personal terms with Ronaldo

I remember years and years ago we have Luis Fabiano at our training ground when he was still playing in Brazil, didn't lead to us ever putting an offer in or anything

As I said managers will say this kind of thing to please the fans

I actually agree with Baz.

Liverpool have gone backwards this season, they sold one of their better players (Rafa forced him out) and haven't really given his "replacement" a chance as of yet.

I think as Baz said it's about getting the balance right, he's just not quite got it yet this season, with a squad like Liverpool's you need to buy those £5 million players as well as one big £20 million signing.

Re: Ronaldo, I'm sure most of the "big" and some of the smaller clubs in Europe new about him.

Barca were fantastic last night.

Norwich V Brighton looked fun :D

Wenger met Ronaldo 3 times before Man Utd were involved. Ronaldo has admitted it too I just can't be bothered to find out quotes. Why would you rather accuse Wenger and the entire media of lying than just accept that maybe you weren't right, just seems a bit weird

I said all along that Liverpool losing Alonso would effect them more than us loosing Ronaldo would and how I've been proved correct ;)

The thing is Rafa has tried to buy the squad players that are needed he's just got them wrong, the only one who has worked out is Benayoun. You look at all the wide players and full backs Rafa has gone through since being at Liverpool in theory he was right strengthening those positions but he did it with the wrong players

From what I have read regarding the Ronaldo/Liverpool/Arsenal situation, I remember it all came out after we had signed him and he turned into the player he is today.

Liverpool knew about him Arsenal knew about him (and showed him round), MU turned up, played Sporting Lisbon, liked the look of him and bought him.

Simples.

Some teams hold a bigger draw than others ;)

Exactly all you've got is 'quotes' nothing concrete. How on earth could he of been on the verge of signing for you and Liverpool and apparently Newcastle yet end up signing with us

Oh and it's got nothing to do with me being right or wrong I've got my opinion on it and that is that clubs/managers will say they were close to signing player x y and z just so it appears that they didn't miss a trick

Why on earth would it please fans? So we missed out on signing a great player, yeah that makes me happy...

He's mentioned before that a fee was agreed. It's not as if Ronaldo was an unknown before he joined Utd.

I'd never heard of him before we played Lisbon that night

Of course everyone can say they knew all about him all these years later

And that sums it up perfectly, a club knowing about a player does not mean they were close to signing him

I'd like to think we knew all about Kaka when Milan signed him from Brazil, doesn't mean we were ever close to actually signing him or even making any contact

The first objective of signing any player is to agree a fee with the selling club, as proved in the article you provided Arsenal never managed to do that with Sporting so unless Wenger is admitting to tapping up Ronaldo then during these 'meets' personal terms couldn't have been discussed either

Ergo the transfer was never close because nothing was ever agreed, why cant you understand that?

He seemed to think it was close, I guess he didn't ask Tom84

That article claims that we had an agreement in place before the game with Sporting..... well going by video interviews from Fergie that is not how the transfer came about at all, hence going back to my original point with Baz until I see it with my own two eyes I'll choose not to believe some tin pot written article that could have been wrote by a 5 year old

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-he-was-on-verge-of-arsenal-move-1053461.html

It's from an interview in France Football. I'd say that was more than reputable enough.

He nearly signed, end of story.

HE'S RIGHT NOT EVERYONE ELSE. How dare Ronaldo lie about his past just to humiliate somebody who posts on OcUK

Ronaldo says Manchester United offered him more money than Arsenal

Obviously Arsenal can't compete with Man Utd financially, that's why Man Utd got him

Edit - It means nothing anyway, and I can't believe you're surprised, if there is one thing Wenger is good at, it's buying promising players

Liverpool really seem to lack creativity at the moment

I'm a sunderland fan and at the moment theres a fair few of the liverpool team I wouldnt want in my side! and thats something you could never have said in years gone by

Babel or lucas simply are not of the quality you would expect in a liverpool team and to be honest probably wouldnt make it into any of the teams in the current top 8 of the premiership, kuyt gets loads of stick but I'm not even sure of his best position, is he an out and out striker? doesnt look like it to me but thats where he seems to get played

and of course without Torres you seem to offer no real threat up front..money spent on Johnson seems daft when you were criminally short of another quality striker

Sorry if all ready posted but only have a couple minutes.
