Midweek Football Thread *spoilers inside so watch out*

Jebus hadn't heard about any of that

It was the terrifying call Dimitar Berbatov has feared since becoming a major soccer star.

Mafia mobsters threatened to snatch the £30million Manchester United ace’s wife Elena and newborn baby daughter Dea unless he handed over £500,000.

The 28-year-old Bulgarian striker was so scared he fled his country immediately with his family after striking a deal with the gang. And Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to have sanctioned a private charter jet to fly them back to England.

One family friend said: “Dimi is still very worried for his family and has promised his neighbours money if they notice any suspicious people around his house.”

Berbatov, who was kidnapped as an 18-year-old by the boss of a rival football team, had been back home in Sofia with Elena and little Dea when mob bosses are said to have contacted his mother Margarita with their kidnap threat 10 days ago.

He is believed to have refused to tell the police after underworld sources told him officials from Bulgaria’s Internal Affairs ministry were in on the plot.

It is also understood the star negotiated a deal with gang bosses who agreed to leave his family alone.

But United have beefed up security at his home in England. A club spokesman said last night: “As this is a security matter we have no comment to make.”

Berbatov’s first kidnap ordeal came when he was a rising star at CSKA Sofia. According to a book, confirmed by the player, he was snatched after training by three henchmen of feared gangland chief Georgi Iliev.

The thug was said to be determined to force him to sign for his club Levski Kjustendil. But as he was being taken to meet Iliev, Berbatov managed to make a frantic call to his dad Ivan who intervened and thrashed out a deal.

Talking last month about the incident, the striker said: “It was a horrific ordeal but a long time ago now.”

I know the game has slowed down a little but Macheda looks like a real talent, great technique and confident on the ball. Reminds me of Pato quite a lot

Mafia threatened his family, he had to be flown back from Bulgaria on a private jet

Similar thing happend to one of our reserve keepers. He ended up with 3 minders after an acid attack on his car after likening some Bulgarian Mafia bosses girlfriend to a Trabant (some **** East German Car).

Gibson really does look like evil incarnate.

Hence his nickname, Evil Carrick. :D

I'm quite impressed with how Obertan has blended into the team, he doesn't have that deer in the headlights look that some players get when playing in the first team, and his link up play with Evra is very good.

that header sums spurs up tonight.

well, I've been more excited by United wins but I'm pretty pleased for the kids we had out. Obviously Spur's weren't giving it everything but it's still a good win.

Really good performance tonight all over the pitch, all the youngsters did very well indeed against a strong Spurs line-up. Don't need to say more about Gibson really, say what you like about him but he really can score, something that we aren't blessed with from midfield. His scoring rate for a fringe player is pretty damn good. Another good performance and clean sheet from Kuszczak as well...

I thought Spurs were worse as the game went on, which is a shame as Bale looked good and at half time I expected them to come out and really go for United.

Gibson played well, He's played well since the game against Spurs in the final last year? Which I said at the time and was shot down :p

Neville actually has no pace anymore, get the man a zimmerframe.

Still wanted to see Tosic.

why did De Laet never ever get a game for his last club? Don't get me wrong he hardly looks like a world beater but he's a pretty steady eddy from what I've seen.

Also PIG isn't making it look great for Foster currently, he's doing more than enough to be our no 2.

Still wanted to see Tosic.

well we did for 8 odd minutes, he looked fine. Obviously we were barely trying 2-0 up with the game almost over but he doesn't look a bad corner taker and he somehow beat Dawson in the air at one point :D Needed more time though. Obertan has had 2 starts and 3 sub appearances I think now, Tosic needs at least a consecutive half at some point. Preferably while Park plays for the reserves until he gets fitter and generally sharper.
