So why arent they allowed to fly them here? I mean lightnings.
The Lightning is quite a complex aircraft and as such would fall into the 'Complex' category for a Certificate of Airworthiness if one were to be given.

The CAA deem them an unsafe design due to a number of reasons. The location of fuel lines near the jet pipes proved to be a cause of fires when in service. Redundancy of flying controls being a couple of nitrogen bottles to blow down the flaps and gear for a landing, with limited stick movement.

The fuel tank range is also quite an interesting point, IIRC 15 minutes with some use of reheat :o

Also if one were to be a flyer, it would need an OEM such as BAe to back it with spares, repairs and mods. The engines, finding Rolls Royce Avon engines with Zero hours would be like looking for rocking horse ****, lack of parts is a stumbling block.

Then the choice of a suitable airframe in this country, all are suffering from some sort of corrosion and have high fatigue index's and hours on the airframes.

Numerous other reasons, though it shows how much of a nanny state we live in. They've been flying three Lightnings with a possibly forth in South Africa for quite a few years now with no serious incidents that I know of.

VeNT, it's a Handley Page Victor.

Incidentally I couldn't pick a favorite jet as there are too many, The Buccaneer, Tornado and F-16 would definately be on the shortlist though..

The F22 Raptor for me. I can remember watching a program ages ago about the design and building / testing of it and it was just brilliant.

Always had a thing for the F14 tomcat as well ( I believe thats the one with the adjustable wings).

Oh and of course the harrier!

Ooooh and the lockheed SR-71 Blackbird!

F14 or maybe the ME 262.... :)

Funny you should mention the 262..

There's one being rebuilt at the moment to full flying condition. :D

Will take a couple of years, but it's on route. :D Complete with original engines as well.

I'm at my parents in Mildenhall, Suffolk at the moment and RAF Lakenheath is only a couple of miles away....get them flying over head daily :D

Cool - I live in Worlington... tiny village not far from you. :)

Shame about the Mildenhall air show, I used to love going to that as a kid. Absolutely fantastic display and range of planes, yet it was only a couple of quid to get in.

Favourite plane would have to be the A10.... purely for the guns. :o
Although the A-10 can carry a considerable weight of disposable stores, its primary built-in weapon is the 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun. One of the most powerful aircraft cannon ever flown, it fires large, depleted uranium armor-piercing shells at a rate of 4,200 rounds per minute. The massive shells and high muzzle velocity allow the Avenger to destroy heavily armored main battle tanks in as little as 6 direct hits.
