Migrating single SATA ---> RAID 0

Hello all,

I've currently got a WD5000AAKS, a relatively old hard drive, and yesterday I purchased a WD 1TB Black.

While I was using Partition Magic to migrate my old HDD to the new HDD I started wondering if I can migrate this 500gb to a RAID 0 assuming that I get another WD 1TB Black, since my understanding is that a RAID would be seen as a single partition to the OS.

Is this possible and can be done without too much headache?

Cheers.

If you don't like the answer in that thread try this one instead :)

In short:

Clone to an ide drive (ide to avoid any funnies once sata raid is enabled), ensure drive is bootable and match the Volume ID's
Remove sata drive and boot ide.
Enable raid and install drivers.
Connect new drives and create raid array.
Clone from ide to the new array, ensure array is bootable and match Volume ID's
Remove ide and boot your new system :)

You don't need sysprep. As you're not changing mb's none of your existing drivers need to change. All you need is a reliable way to add the raid driver to your existing system, that and the Volume ID trick to deal with any 'sensitive' software :D No guarantees but the procedure in post #3 may just work.

Awesome, I'll do it and skip the SYSPREP part, I don't need to strip down my drivers =)

One final question:

Which drive are better at RAID 0, if any significantly:

WD 500GB Black or,
WD 1000GB Black?

Contemplating whether to get another 500GB Black or 1TB Black as I have one of each, and was thinking 1000GB should be faster than 500GB (3 vs 2 platters?).

I have no idea how quick the 1000G are but I do have a pair of 500G blacks in raid0, they work well. I decided anything over 1TB would go in my little server box, I just cannot rationalise 1TB+ in raid0 in my main PC.

Ok I've got a problem...

I got the vista installation on an IDE and set the bios to RAID.

As windows boots I get a bsod and system reboots.
I can't install the ich10r driver in vista as I get the "system requirement not met" msg..

I am stuck please help!!

My only problems were cured by matching the volume id's to always equal the the id of the original source disk.

Let's step through the process:

1) Original sata system disk, no raid drivers, raid disabled boots ok ? (obviously, I think :) )
2) Clone of original system on ide disk boots ok with sata drive removed, raid disabled and no raid drivers ?
3) Enabling raid, booting ide with sata drive removed, ok but drivers fail to install ?

Removing the sata drive during 2) and 3) may, or may not, be important but it's a wise move. Double check any boot priority setting in the bios too as I've seen windows do some strange things when two boot drives are installed eg happily load boot.ini from one drive yet load the system from another
