Mind boggling facts that make you go..

Good luck to 'em. Might be a time to start buying up Nvidia stock!

I watched this video this morning, I didn't think it real and thought it was someones idea of an exaggerated story but it turns out to be true.

I watched this yesterday, knew about the dude and the story behind him but it's a great story (Real story).

There are more bacterial cells living in and on your body than there are human cells making your body.

The 200C dilution used in homeopathic flu "treatments" equates to 1 molecule of active ingredient diluted in all the matter in 10^320 universes.

Here's some from my thread of about 2 years ago:

There are more cells of bacteria in your body than human cells

It takes a photon, on average, 170,000 years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface.

111,111,111 × 111,111,111 = 12345678987654321.

There’s a gas cloud in the constellation of Aquila that contains enough alcohol to make 400 trillion trillion pints of beer.

The world’s oceans contain 20 million tons of gold

The dates 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, and 12/12 all fall on the same day of the week during any one year.

In 1938, Adolf Hitler was Time magazine’s Man of the Year and in 1939, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

A “dancing plague” killed people in Strasbourg in 1518.
A “dancing mania” began in July 1518, when a woman began to dance fervently in a street for about four to six days. Eventually she was joined by about 400 dancers. There aren't any concrete statistics on fatalities, but some of these people eventually died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.

Marilyn Monroe had a higher IQ (163) than that of Albert Einstein (160).

The bushes and clouds in Super Mario Bros are the same, just coloured differently.

All my posted facts within my posts are verified as genuine but feel free to check. I cannot speak for any other people's posts within the thread.
Half of all humans who have ever lived, died from malaria.

Once Charlie Chaplin entered a contest for “Charlie Chaplin look-alikes” and he came in third.

Fold over a piece of paper 42 times and it will reach the moon

54 million people alive right now will be dead within 12 months.

A tree is the opposite of your lungs. Physically and functionally.

If you put all the earth’s ants in one pile, and all the earth’s humans in another pile, the pile made of ants would be bigger (have more mass).

The population of Ireland is still 2 million less than it was before the potato famine, 160 years ago.

Napoleon was not unusually short. The French inch was longer than the British inch, so while he was thought to be 5’2” by most of the world, in reality he was closer to 5’7”, an average height for a Frenchman. (still pretty short though!)

There is a rubbish swirl in the ocean the size of Texas.

Black HP printer ink costs roughly 1,400 times as much as crude oil, gallon for gallon.

Humans have the genetic capability to hibernate.

All mammals are equipped with the genetic mechanisms for hibernation, which can be used as an extreme survival tactic. Read more about the actual science here.

Wombat poo is square.

President Lyndon B. Johnson owned an amphibious car and used to drive guests into the lake to scare them, screaming about brake failure.

A shamanic group in Mexico worships Coca-Cola as a healing drug

The Mongolian Navy at one point consisted of a tugboat and seven men.

Some really interesting facts in this thread. Love the sugar one.

I enjoyed this video on black hole size comparison. Much like the OP the size is hard to get your head around

That's incredible. I like the way the suns keep multiplying to billions to match the mass of the super massive black hole.
If all the women in Liverpool were laid end to end, I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
LOL :D
If you could fold a piece of paper in half exactly 103 times, it would be thicker than the entire observable universe (93 billion light years).
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/gizm...lf-103-times-it-will-be-as-thi-1607632639/amp
I'm struggling with this one. Even if it could physically be folded that many times, 103 doesn't sound like it would be the thickness of the observable universe. Amazing fact, I'm sure it's absolutely true.

Well, sugar is about 16 kJ/gram.

500 * 16 kJ = 8 MJ

3600 MJ = 1 MWh

8 MJ/3600 MJ = 0.00222 MWh, therefore it looks like the above is several orders of magnitude out...

That's if you burn it. The person you're replying to was assuming a perfect conversion between matter and energy. So for 500g of matter you're looking at ~45,000,000,000 MJ, not 8 MJ.

If you climb up any mountain, you will weigh measurably less than when you left the base. Conversely, you will put on a measurable amount of weight when you descend back down. Gravity at work!

If you bore a tunnel into the center of the base of the mountain.

Are you heavier because you are nearer the center of the earth, or lighter because of the mass of mountain above you?

It would depend on how deep the tunnel was and on the average density of the mountain, but you would be lighter than you would be at the same depth and away from the mountain.

The change is miniscule. The fact that it's measureable is due to the sensitivity of equipment, not the size of the change. Even in a plane flying much higher than any mountain, your weight is only reduced by a few dozen grams.

Re aircraft,

It is still probably a big enough difference to matter in the everyday world. the time/gravity/altitude thing can be detected using accurate clocks. and (probably) has to be compensated for when using GPS if you need a really accurate measurement.

i think that the further you get to the centre of the earth the more weightless you get, i think.

I learned this while helping with my daughter's chemistry revision.

Zinc galvanisation can otect areas of bare metal from oxidation as well as fully covered areas. It doesn't have to completely cover it to offer some protection. This is because as the metal loses electrons to oxidisation it steals some of those electrons back from the less stable zinc.

People often have trouble comprehending scale when it comes to large numbers. Here is a sobering representation of wealth.

If I gave you £1 a second every second in 11.5 days you'd be a millionaire.

I'd have to gave you £1 every second for almost 32 years before you reached 1 billion.
