Minecraft - I dont get it

If it had awesome high textured graphics, I would have bought this instantly.

How shallow. Because good gaming is all about graphics. Sod the bloody gameplay. I want bump mapping, shader models and anti-aliasing.

Chess and Go don't stand a chance against people like you.

Chess has better graphics than Minecraft. So does Baldurs Gate II. Even Sonic the Hedgehog.

You can install texture packs to improve the graphics if so desired. Minecraft is great fun to play no matter what it looks like though.

I noticed a massive improvement when I installed my new 5770 to replace my 4850 in minecraft. :p

I actually think it has good graphics.

Me too. I remember seeing a screenshot on /v/ [yeah yeah, I know] ages ago and thinking what the hell is that? I was instantly intrigued by the screenshot. Flaming torches and dark dungeons in an old-school blocky RPG setting? I was sold.

I bought minecraft thinking it wouldn't be that fun, but I was dead wrong. Images/gameplay video don't do it justice.

It actually really hammered my 4850, fans would go up to like 90%.

5770 is silent running so far :)

Interesting, had no idea it would make such a difference.

I'm off Minecraft for the next few days since my monitor broke so I'm stuck with the netbook. This thing doesn't have a chance of running MC. Even with everything on lowest setting I'm getting about 10fps. The 'calculator' brigade can sod right off.

At a first glance it does look like crap, but I wouldn't let this hold you back. There is a reason why it's becoming so popular and so many people are saying good stuff about it.

It's a truly genius game and has so much potential it's unreal, notch has unlimited possibilities with the game as far as adding content goes.

It's defiantly worth the purchase, don't judge it until you've tried it.

Might have enjoyed it if the gfx were better and their was more than blocks. Least in lego it have a hell of a lot of custom blocks and shapes.

It wouldn't work with anything BUT blocks. Mine a block, place a block. If they weren't cubes it would be a nightmare. And there are 'custom blocks': doors, carts, plates, switches, water, lava etc. are of unique shapes and sizes.

I think people come into MC expecting to 'OK, gotta build a house,' and then expect there to be a 'roof block'. Or they see videos of massive stadiums and expect there to be stadium-specific blocks.

You have a very finite number of block types. But combinations of which - both in fixed crafting recipes and your imagination - really can make a LOT possible. With enough time and space you could literally build anything you want.

It might not have all the bells and whistles with dynamic characters and narrative.. but if you want to build a 100 meter-wide floating pair of glowing breasts, you can.

Give yourself a project, just be careful what it is.

I decided to build the underground dwaven city from the first LOTR film. Spent more time building a minecart track/station to get me to and from sources of sand to fill in underground lava pools.

That's interesting because my 4850 doesn't go to 90% fan speed, for certain.

And I have full distance and "fancy" graphics, if that even changes anything.

I never get people who say the graphics are poor on this game.
There have been countless times when I've been won over by the surroundings in the game, some of the random generated stuff looks great.

It's a great game, only improved when you're online.
Build whatever you want, explore (epic) caverns, find resources, kill zombies... It's all I need, but I'm maybe just a simple kind of person. :D

My mates bought it so I had a go with them but yeah.. not for me, not saying it is a bad game though because it's clearly not.
