Minecraft - I dont get it

As someone who started gaming in the days of Pong and continued gaming right through to the modern age I love the retro look of Minecraft. It's almost Tron like in its simplicity. It has an aesthetic that is simply beautiful and the random landscapes are so scenic. It's one of those games like Oblivion, Just Cause 2 or Crysis where I'll just stop for a second and admire the view.

The gameplay itself also appeals on a fundamental level. It balances several great human motivations - the desire to explore, the desire to create space (mining) and the desire to build.

Ok, it's a little shallow in terms of the survival gameplay and the custom items you can build, but I think it's an excellent game, and a great example of games that can only be done on the PC.

I like the basic premise of Minecraft, just do whatever you want but as others have said it is still lacking a goal. It is all well and good to build stuff or a city with friends but I reckon that some sort of PvP and big servers would really up the appeal for me. May be you could build a castle or a city with your friends and have an army and then attack another city or castle and kill other members. I could see it working in that way seeing as the sandbox part of it is so open and amazingly well done by what some users have done.

Another option would be for the survival aspect of the game to be improved so the enemies get smarter and stronger every day it goes and you actually have to build your castles, ships, whatever in order to survive. That will also work – for what I have heard the enemies you can encounter are not very difficult to get rid off.

there's mods that do that, you can have countries etc.

i started playing a few weeks back and im totally hooked. Fantastic little sandbox game. Just the non linear route in a game is so rare these days. This literally has no objective, just do what you want, make what you want. I think thats why its so addictive.

This will change though. There is talk of making more obvious targets to progress in the game before final release.

If they do that , could that not split the community? , i mean i for one love it because fundamentally you make the objectives, the game has none set out. If anything is edited/changed it should be done via a vote and what the members of the community want :)

I would think that if objectives were added, the classic "do what you want" gameplay would still remain as a seperate option in-game.

I imagine it's more along these lines. You don't have to progress but should you want to, the option will be open.
