the whole game is about investing large amounts of time (mining/gathering) for a smaller trade off (buildings, armour etc), if that's not what you're in to then it's probably not really your kind of game.

yeah thats a possibility, though i dont know if it's sustainable - you'd have to produce a lot of wheat to do that,so much so we'd probably end up with 1000's in chests going unused lol
hey0 is not the only person who does the updates, there is a whole team who will still be working on it.
Think there's a website, something like ishmodupdated.com so I think we'll see an update before 24th
mob and animal farms are automatic as is cactus farming all you have to do is stand still and collect.
Wheat has to be harvested but in a restart you might want to grow some as it's got more health per inventory space than pork.
odds are you'll notice it has become ready to harvest when you don't need it so you can sell surplus.
Looking forward to the changes gars has mentioned as well as the disappearance of the dupe bug. Never used it myself but I can't guarantee that I haven't been given materials from others that have been duped.
I'm also in support of a map reset, I've always found that the server is the most fun soon after a reset and spawn atm is appalling. It's pointless trying to do anything there right now, a new map will allow us to plan the spawn out together, light it up, wall it off (small walls would do for now) and slowly expand in a realistic manner.
I'd also like to see, and this is a purely subjective view, a more realistic world. No 1 block towers, no sky roads blocking the light of everything underneath, no floating buildings, no upside down pyramids for example. One of the city maps we worked on back in MC classic was a realistic map and it looked fantastic and was far more fun than the others where people just built random abstract crap all over the place.
Like I said though that's all purely in my own opinion but I believe some others feel the same. I'd like to atleast see a ban on ridiculous towers all over the place and one or two block sky roads going over everyones buildings.

From the actual release notes it doesn't look like the dupe bug has been fixed? If it's what i think it is though i can't wait 'till it is since i sometimes seem to do it by accident but it makes you loose items more often than you get them.

There’s a serious problem getting the client started for some people (especially Mac OSX?). I’ve also heard about weird item duplication bugs with dropped items, and a severe performance reduction.
It’s 7:40 PM here, but I will work on these bugs tomorrow.
I’m also hoping to be able to squeeze in some fun for xmas.. Perhaps a new mob?

Gars has said before that the server is not a democracy which I can respect as he does all the work for the server and pays for the vast majority of it. In the end it's up to gars whether the server resets or not. As has been said before as well a lot of people don't actively post or read in this thread and as such don't voice their opinion here. A server reset will inevitably result in the loss of many of them.
Like I said though I favour a reset but those are just some points to consider.
Yeah I know, but if everyone was opposed to it that would obviously play a part in gars choice.
was there an answer to "can you play without updating?" will updating mean not being able to connect to the server?

Having read through all the points made it seems that unfortunately due to the dupe bug the server essentially turned into a creative server as opposed to the original intended survival server (sans mobs).
Back when we had the two servers any large project required the services of several people fulfilling various roles like when we worked on the Pantheon, we had miners, crafters, planners, builders etc, this fostered a real community spirit as we also helped each other clear land and work on each others pet projects. On server 2 there was a much more organised and well planned spawn area where the buildings worked well together and avoided many of the garish towers and ridiculous 1 block bridge-ways that we see today.
Personally I've split my minecraft time between the server and a single player map I've been working on for a very long time. With single player you have to manage your resources much better, use stone tools for general work; keep iron for blocks that can only be mined with them; same with diamond, what little I have is used primarily for obsidian mining for building nether portals.
I've seen what we could achieve without duping and a strong community, hopefully with beta and a world restart we can return to this. My heart goes out to those who have steadily built up modest establishments without any dupes, unfortunately it has been obvious for some time that this day was coming.
@gars - The ideas you have come up with post restart are very well considered and fair and I for one happily support them after all we are all guests on the server. This probably doesn't get said as often as it should but Thank You for making the server available and working so hard to maintain and improve its facilities.
