I wouldn't mind a residential area, with plots of land for people to claim. This way we could have proper paths as well as a bank, community centre, train station, etc. People could then also have projects underway a little further out from spawn, perhaps reachable by tunnels from under their residence.
Yeah we had a lot of that stuff in the old original server.
Was much more engrossing than now where everyone just builds ridiculous structures and spawns infinite diamonds, etc.
I also like the idea of banning stupid buildings like inverted pyramids, skybridges, etc.
Just like to point this out >>>>> http://twitter.com/notch/status/17178938224672768
As you would not beleve how much it gets me when I start to get questioned when there is lag.
Players just seem to think its got to be the servers host.
What's the crack with a reset then gar once beta release is stable, looks like jmiller was the only one opposed to the suggestion?
Doesn't work for me, soon as you login it updates again? Am I doing something wrong?
Only thing i think is weird in "towns" is the generic houses people make then never ever visit again.
Because lets face it a basic house is pointless.
gar, whatever map you have on now is pretty good. Flat and lots of caves.
I think its a good idea. I think it would be better if there was more of a town centre; a large grass area and a town hall for example. That's what made me think of springfield lol. if we put that in the middle of what you have planned there, i think it would work well.
also, i would perhaps change the layout of the houses so they aren't so uniform like that, maybe remove each other road/path and have the houses backing on to each other, something like that. Just to mix it up a bit
you're right but doesn't that go for every completed project? it all adds to atmosphere imo.
so here's a quick mock up, it's very basic and only shows the first block level and is easily changeable using excel to cater for large accommodation/more space, wider roads etc. the bank vaults could run under the entire 'town' if people are prevented from building underneath their own homes, each 'home' block could be simply a plot of land with the plot owner being allowed to build upwards (a certain height?) and perhaps downwards a certain depth.
down the streets there would be lamp posts for light to prevent mob spawns, the wall could have a rail line running around the 'ramparts' and the rail station would have a tube network running out from the long side of the building (facing the wall) in the air made of glass that cuts through the town wall and then could lead to various community projects outside the town. the air tubes would not be visible from the town centre and so would not be an eyesore (if you viewed them that way).
here's the pic.
the each internal 1x1 block is representative of a 2x2 blocks (the wall however is merely representative and could be as thick or as thin as is deemed appropriate). houses could be made smaller than their current 16x16 base footprint so that more could be incorporated OR alternatively multiple plots could be converted in to high rise apartments thus allowing for a greater number of user homes.
like i say, it is a bit basic but it would provide a massive community project from the start just with land clearance. and then the building of the bank, shop and station as well as private projects in the form of houses and community projects outside the wall such as community farms (this would perhaps require cartographers to explore for cacti, reeds and so on to provide an initial plant stock) and so on...
any thoughts?
All you'll get then is a collection of incredibly bland cubes.
houses round spawn are always dull because there's very very little you can do with a small square of flat land, inside a bigger square of flat land.
