Minecraft OCuK Forum Members Server Thread

I'm just going to sit tight until we know if there is a reset or not. I've got a few ideas for another project, so I might start planning that out.

I wouldn't mind a residential area, with plots of land for people to claim. This way we could have proper paths as well as a bank, community centre, train station, etc. People could then also have projects underway a little further out from spawn, perhaps reachable by tunnels from under their residence.

that was what i was planning to incorporate, as well as a 'town wall' which would be the boarder between the spawn area (undevelopable space (save for say a 10x10 'home') and the 'free zone' (space for unlimited use).

but i'll show what i've got when i've got it so people can see and decide if they like it.

out of curiosity; is there a minimum area required for a train station? i was also thinking of an ultra modern above ground glass tube network for safe foot travel as well as rail travel.

Yeah we had a lot of that stuff in the old original server.

Was much more engrossing than now where some just builds ridiculous structures and spawns infinite diamonds, etc. (Don't get me wrong, there are some great structures, but also a lot of eyesores ;) )

I also like the idea of banning stupid buildings like inverted pyramids, skybridges, etc. from the town.

I like the idea of laying paths, having shops, etc too and keeping massive structures, etc away from a 'town centre' (By all means people should be able to build them, but would just be nice to keep a town looking... 'towny').

We're testing a couple of new maps with gar atm.

As appreciate I haven't been on the server very long compared to many but I would favour a server reset to a chest wipe as well. I've put a lot of work into my current project which I'm loath to lose but I think the positives outway the negatives.

Can't we try something like D.Roberts mentions in post #2285? A set of communities that are seperate and trade resources? Just an idea. Personally, I'll be resuming my efforts on making an underground dwarven city.

Just like to point this out >>>>> http://twitter.com/notch/status/17178938224672768
As you would not beleve how much it gets me when I start to get questioned when there is lag.
Players just seem to think its got to be the servers host.

only stupid people blame the server. few days ago, Max asked me if i was experiencing lag at the same point on the map as him - i was, and we quickly realised it was the better light plugin - with lots of redstone and lights around, it totally loads up one cpu core, causing it to lag. Understandable, it's not exactly the pinnacle of multi-core programming. Either way, we knew it had nothing to do with the server or the host.

What's the crack with a reset then gar once beta release is stable, looks like jmiller was the only one opposed to the suggestion?

ARRGHH no im not opposed to it. You're the only person saying i am! The only thing i said remotely close to being opposed to it was that in minecraft's current state of affairs, i'm not sure its worth the effort. That's hardly opposed to the idea, is it? And like Darg said, not everybody is going to pipe up - they'll just stop playing like they did with the last reset. I'm not bothered about a reset at all, and i'm happy to get stuck in with planning and building spawn.

.....we could build that :D

Only thing i think is weird in "towns" is the generic houses people make then never ever visit again.

Because lets face it a basic house is pointless.

you're right but doesn't that go for every completed project? it all adds to atmosphere imo.

so here's a quick mock up, it's very basic and only shows the first block level and is easily changeable using excel to cater for large accommodation/more space, wider roads etc. the bank vaults could run under the entire 'town' if people are prevented from building underneath their own homes, each 'home' block could be simply a plot of land with the plot owner being allowed to build upwards (a certain height?) and perhaps downwards a certain depth.

down the streets there would be lamp posts for light to prevent mob spawns, the wall could have a rail line running around the 'ramparts' and the rail station would have a tube network running out from the long side of the building (facing the wall) in the air made of glass that cuts through the town wall and then could lead to various community projects outside the town. the air tubes would not be visible from the town centre and so would not be an eyesore (if you viewed them that way).

here's the pic.

the each internal 1x1 block is representative of a 2x2 blocks (the wall however is merely representative and could be as thick or as thin as is deemed appropriate). houses could be made smaller than their current 16x16 base footprint so that more could be incorporated OR alternatively multiple plots could be converted in to high rise apartments thus allowing for a greater number of user homes.

like i say, it is a bit basic but it would provide a massive community project from the start just with land clearance. and then the building of the bank, shop and station as well as private projects in the form of houses and community projects outside the wall such as community farms (this would perhaps require cartographers to explore for cacti, reeds and so on to provide an initial plant stock) and so on...

any thoughts?

I think its a good idea. I think it would be better if there was more of a town centre; a large grass area and a town hall for example. That's what made me think of springfield lol. if we put that in the middle of what you have planned there, i think it would work well.

also, i would perhaps change the layout of the houses so they aren't so uniform like that, maybe remove each other road/path and have the houses backing on to each other, something like that. Just to mix it up a bit :)

All you'll get then is a collection of incredibly bland cubes.

houses round spawn are always dull because there's very very little you can do with a small square of flat land, inside a bigger square of flat land.

have you seen city houses? outside the spawn town you could have a country house on a larger scale with less cubism...

my idea behind having it so well laid out is that it's easy to orient yourself and it's easy to see what's what.

maybe i'm simply over thinking it but it seems more interesting to me than a half arsed, unplanned, collection of megaliths right where you spawn.
