Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

Tempted to try this, but to put it bluntley it looks ****. Iv'e tried reading the official site, but it doesn't seem to give much of an idea what you actually do

Could you guys give me a quick run down pretty please :)

Build mines, build stuff, craft materials, fight monsters etc. It's a nice little game for £8, I just bought it to mess around with on my mac when I am travelling etc as I fly a lot and get very bored.

Massive multiplayer sandbox. Essentially create what you like :)

Edit: Need ideas! Was considering making a massive maze, but don't know if it would be any good...

Finally had some time to just sit and play on my main machine at home.
Decided to go back to the mine I was working on, and get some light into the the cave system I'd accidentally dug into.

Hours later, I'd sealed up some parts of the cave and lit large sections of it. It just seemed to go on forver. :|
Dug up to the surface *somewhere* and built a small house over the opening.
Got to go and mine for some serious materials then I'll go and light up the rest of the cave system to see what can be found.
Going by what I've done already, there'll be some serious zombies/exploding things to kill.

I should be playing Dead Rising but I just can't escape Minecraft. For costing so little, I can't believe how good it is.
Best Sandbox game I've played in recent memory, possibly ever... :|

Im not an expert but if you dont want to pay, you can try the classic version free in Multiplayer... dont think you get all the crafting options etc, but you get the idea by digging and building etc

Personally im stuck on the fence, I want it but I know inside of me that im not creative enough to do exciting things... so will end up getting bored.

The turning point would be a full survival multiplayer mode.... that would make me get it as i love multiplayer hi-jinx :D

To be honest...neither am i...however, i'm having fun just digging and digging :p

Just dug god knows how deep in my mine shaft, and came across water!!! And about 5 zombie things...and those blaster arrow firiring things!!! AGGH

Get two buckets of water, create a 4x4 hole in the ground and pour the two buckets into opposite corners. This will give you an infinite supply of water.

haha, how did you repair? Just dig a ditch for it? :p

Hmm... That would probably have been the wiser solution.
I dug a secondary mine all the way to where the water breach was and blocked it off. Oops.

Regarding running water, I wasn't so sure so just built behind a waterfall and have a blocked "window of water" area...

...Well...I've built a random hole thing, but im trying to get the things that go into to drown...however they seem to just walk back towards the top! :(

Random Minecraft anecdote number 845:

Having armed myself with a compass, I went exploring and eventually hit the coast. Offshore was a small island with an entrance to a huge cavern complex which went down and down and down, and then down some more. I start to find all sorts of great materials and lose track of time and how much stuff I'd accumulated.

I reach an area which has a sand ceiling. Never seen that before. Right at the edge is a lonely block of coal, and I couldn't just leave it there. So I gave it the axe and then... a block or two of sand started to slide. Then another and.... the whole ceiling suddenly collapsed around me, burying me. Despite the fact I'm playing on Peaceful, with regenerating health, I slowly died. And my island megacavern was miles & miles away from my spawn.

By the time I rediscovered the island, there was no trace of the sand or my gear. Just loads of water down there. But when I plugged up the holes I eventually discovered a massive cavern even further down filled with lava and water. And in there were a few diamonds and quite a few chunks of obsidian.

It is so hard to work out why this thing is so addictive and so satisfying. But it certainly is! I then built a boat and went sailing off into the sunset. I haven't reached the edge of the world yet, but I intend to find it. My saved world went up from about 5Mb to 18Mb in one boat trip. Only 2Gb or so of memory left to fill. :-)

PS I think this might be the game if the decade, and I'm not even sure why. Of course it might just as easily be one of those internet based crazes we all get sucked into occasionally. But somehow I don't think so.

I too lost all my gear through an ill advised trip to somewhere random. Forgot I had the difficulty on hard and went to have a bash at some evils. Also forgot I had no armour on, let's just say that was a short fight then a very long attempt to find where I had been. I still haven't found it, it's even worse because I decided to try the tunnel down to the ground in the middle of the ocean thing so all that's stick above the surface is one tile of wood and a boat. It was dark as well at the time so I don't even know what the nearby coastline was like! Doh!

That's the last time I take all my diamond gear with me on a random wander.

I have a hosted 10 player server + 10 slot mumble voice coms, it's running but I am getting it setup with mods at the moment so it will be up & down for the next few days.

Awesome, will have to connect at some point. :)

Just found my second big cave. It's HUUUUUUGE compared to the first one. Mineral deposits galore. :D

My map was the same, the first couple of caves we're fairly small then all of a sudden I came across a huge one. Ended up moving all my stuff over there.
I still can't figure what makes it so addictive to play? I mean it is essentially just mining blocks and building afterall?! :P

I always find as my mind starts to get bored, and I just say to myself "I'll just mine a few more blocks then turn it off", boom! Massive deposit of something that has to be dealt with. :D

lol this is cool. One of my good friends from a forum we've both been visiting for the last 5 years made this. His vids are normally quite popular with a few thousand views, but this one is over 200k now.

He's really good at video editing though, it's good to see his videos getting popular with all the work he puts into it. His real life time lapses are really great too, for example:
