I'd suggest playing single player first, get the mechanics down for a bit so to speak

Using the .exe isn't limiting you no and as for having to leave animals alive in order for them to mate don't worry they just spawn randomly so kill away. However if there is a chicken around better to fence it in so it can constantly produce eggs for you than kill it.

I know multiplay host dedicated servers for it, if it's the same pricing scheme as most their other stuff, it'll be about a pound per slot.
