Good idea.

How are you using social media differently now, if at all?

I only have Instagram (private not a public account) that I keep my friends and family on. I’ve decided to limit myself to checking it twice a day. Moving it to it’s own homepage in a folder and disabling notifications means it’s out of sight.

I couldn't live like that, looks like a hospital to me, all white and what not. I'm more of English country house kinda guy. My laptop is streamlined and organised to the max though, that's the chaos in my life that i organise.

I get why you want to do it though, if it declutters your brain, more power to you.

I probably have enough computer parts to build two, possibly three, computers. I've started going through it all and sorting out the things I'll throw out (IDE cables, broken VoIP headset) and things that I use and assembling the latter into workable computers. So far I've only actually done an old dual-core 2.1GHz laptop which I've securely wiped, stuck an old SSD in and installed Mint on. Next up I can do an old passively cooled AMD system, a pretty nice FX-8350 system and a slightly crappy NAS. I'd like to sell them but it may be more trouble than it's worth so I'm considering a charity shop for all but the FX-8350 system. Anyway, it will free up a bunch of space and make it a lot easier when I'm looking for a power cable.

I would like to have less junk, we just seem to accumulate things, I am all for a massive clear out but wife would be "no! cant throw out that old bowl nobody likes thats been stuck in the cupboard 20 years, my mum bought me that!"

My local hospital certainly doesn't have RGB and LED strips :D

Here is how my desk is currently:

Believe it or not, I bought a sample paint to try on the walls.. it's grey :p

Your laptop has a clitoris! What make is it? I can never find laptops with one these days. Is it really old or are there still ones being made with them?

Lenovo Thinkpad 13. It’s pretty recent, it has USB C.

Thanks. It's probably going to be a couple of years before I do my next upgrade cycle on my laptop but I will definitely keep Lenovo in mind. I wish I could get a laptop that just had that rather than the touch pad and get some space back. With a touch screen, I'd need the pad even less as well.

Decluttering has been great for me. I also don't feel the need to buy 'stuff' so much anymore.

I still need to do my final round of brutal clear out. Possibly this weekend.

I basically sold, gave away or dumped everything that I hadn't used in the past 6 months unless there was a damn good reason not to.

I could probably fit everything into a large transit van now.

i have a big problem throwing paperwork ,correspondence away and end up stuffing it on a top shelf ,got a file in the attic and its bursting full ,looking forward to consolidating pensions ,that will lose a third of that ,sure its borderline mental disorder

We're moving out in a couple of weeks and whilst we've "been" minimalists for a couple of years, there's still a lot of stuff we could be doing a bit better. I've got a short amount of time to get on with the brutal part of my clearing out. I'd like to take as few items as possible to the new place, otherwise I'd feel like I'm just moving crap about which I don't use.

That sounds like my worst nightmare.

I have a monthly clear out of paperwork, and have condensed it into one large binder. I have two pensions, and it's still more than sufficient.

I'd recommend a scanner (as an app on your phone or a physical one), and keep all of it digital, if you'd prefer to actually "keep" it.

Yeah regarding paperwork and correspondence it can get a bit overwhelming. I have sleeve folders with all the latest correspondence from utility providers, hmrc etc and shred the rest.

I do have a habit of letting mail pile up before dealing with it though. :(
