minimum working temperature?

I guess it depends on the job your doing, i know that if your using dangerous machinery, hand tools, then it should be about 16 deg. theres that many different regulations.

Ignoring the trolling....

Just goes to show how bad the UK laws are regarding the workplace.

.

You think you have it bad?

I found out that down here its up the the Employer to work out when its too hot or cold and send us home, No written law about it and its up to us the employees to keep warm or cool what ever way we can.
They dont even need to Air conditioners in our trucks at work:eek:

Supermarker Shift work is it? Ahh been there done that same situation, hellish is not the word when you're on your feet for 13 hours in minus temperatures..

man up tbh i work with blast chillers 365 days a year for hours at a time at temperatures below 0. if your working you don't feel the cold so move your ass. i apologise if your job consists of sitting on your ass and looking at a screen though.

Because when outdoors your active for a start and generally people who are working in those kinda conditions, sheds/outdoors, etc. are that type that don't mind the cold.

Someone sitting in an office all day should not be exposed to sub 14-15C.
Am guessing you never worked outside all day every day when it's below zero ;)

Any chance you could take breaks in a warm room for 10 minutes out of the hour?

Seems quite reasonable to me.

@all the 'man up' posters; I respect and admire your complete alphaness.

Interesting thread this as me and kieranV certainly worked in what felt like outside temps over christmas(unheated warehouse near the shutter) until we thought it cold enough to steal the staff room and build bikes in there :)

Blimey what's with the trolling today?
The op asked for advice on a situation i certainly wouldn't like to be in.
Luckily i'm in an air conditioned office. But where i used to work we had hardly any heating and typing was almost impossible cos our fingers were numb. Its so NOT enjoyable and employers should consider their staff's welfare if they want them to work their best.
If the op isn't used to such crazy low temps, then its not surprising he and his colleaugues are up in arms about it.
I too find it hard to believe that there is not a set min. working temp for certain indoor environments.

at present it's -14 just outside my office and the heating barely seems to be doing anything, I'm in hat, gloves and coat and still cold.

We have a thermometer in the office for monitoring the heating to make sure we're not using excess energy, currently reading the lowest it can which is 15, I think it's probably colder, our policy strictly states that we can't work at under 13, however I need to stay in to get some stuff done, working from home since monday hasn't acheived a great deal :/

Thanks for the advice guys, still no closer on knowing if the minimum temp still stands but i don't see how both the government and union websites can be wrong so i'm just going to go with it.

To all those who don't seem to comprehend that i don't care about how hard their life was/is ('i worked at minus 300 for 20 years blah blah blah' crowd) the reason we have the benefits we have now in the workplace (4 weeks annual holiday, regular breaks, minimum of 11 hours between shifts, PPE, 6 day working week (max) etc) is because people, workers, stood up for themselves and what the thought was right. I'm not looking for an excuse to skip work, i just want my employer to provide a decent working environment.

I hope it gets sorted soon. The only advice I can offer is to make sure you wear a nice tight base layer under your clothes if possible.

The way I read it is if you get hypothermia or frostbite because you weren't provided adequate protective clothing your employer would be in breach of H&S regs, no?

Hope you get it sorted, I bet it's pretty rubbish being at work and then being frozen at the same time. Probably makes work much tougher

and people like you are the reason our motor industry went down the toilet. be thankful that a) you have a job and b) your not being made redundant.

Ah yes, i forgot slavery wasn't abolished. Like I said, I'm not looking for a skive or a cushy job but I want to at least be comfortable while I'm working, believe it or not it's not too much to ask
