Mint 12 Out Soon!!

Installed this the other night. Loving it so far. Tried using Linux so many times before and always went back to windows. But for now I'm happy, dual booting so i can always head back to windows for games. If only i could play the newest games, i'd leave windows. Just gotta hunt the interweb for tips on how to do things and i'm good to go!

Sorry to say it, but if you're serious about games you'll probably always need to have Windows around. WINE doesn't cut it.

Mind you, if you only played indie games you'd be OK to go 100% Linux. Indie developers are absolutely splendid for supporting Linux these days, to the point where I'm surprised when a new indie comes out that doesn't support it. Happy days! :)

I am seriously considering installing this on my new 'midi' desktop with an Intel i5 2500K, Asus P8P67-M Pro, nVidia 460GX graphics card, and 8 Gb RAM.

Having used Ubuntu on a netbook, I do quite like Linux, and although I am really a Windows man at heart, I don't really fancy spending £70 on an OEM copy of Windows 7, when Windows 8 is not that far away.

Would there be any downsides to installing Linux Mint 12 on my new system?

Same Proc and Mobo here - I've got an nVidia 9800 GT though.

Live disc was really ropey but it was fine once it was installed

EDIT: Unless your a serious gamer I would find it hard to recommend Windows. HL2 and older games are fine under wine/virtualbox for me. Not sure I'll be playing BF3 on it anytime soon though!

It needs to run all the applications that you need it to run. That is the main thing. So if you are a heavy gamer, then you will need Windows for example

Thanks, but I meant to add in my last post that I am not really a heavy gamer, so that it not really a consideration for me at all, but I am sure I will find more than a few to keep me amused anyway!

I decided against downloading Mint 12.

Simple because i have Mint 11 on my system, it works and is supported until late 2012. I'm getting lazy in my old age and seriously CBA to wipe and reinstall. :-D

Guys

Never used this OS before but it looks great and I've heard good things, is it just a case of download the ISO install and off you go like most OS or am I missing something?

I'm just about to buy a Lenovo x121e and pop an SSD in it so while I'm at bare bones thought this would be a good time to install..

If someone could post any advice that will save me time please feel free :)

Thanks

Mart

Haven't tried this myself but it seems you can download the iso and install it from a memory stick if that's what you mean? (see the Mint forums for info).

Yeah you can do that or use the CD/DVD. Slap it in, boot it up, and test it out before you decide whether to install. Easy!

Still on Mint 9 here.:o

I tend to stick with the LTS releases, although 12 does look nice.

My next fresh install will probably be LMDE.

Just d/l mint 12 32bit now to put on an old laptop. I have always used windows before so I am going to have a play around. Hopefully I can get wine and steam working ok so I can play some older games.
