I just played warcraft, the battery crapped out after an hour on performance mode.

Edited to say, my lap is now burning hot :p

you've been sterilised by the xps

Don't play it on my lap, need a flat surface so the fans can keep my oc'd cpu/gpu in check :p

Fortunately the hospital beat the dell to it by a few years :)

Im gonna stick windows XP on it tomorrow, to see if it makes any difference to the speed, i want smooth as silk in warcraft, and im not getting it at the mo.

What are you using to Oc the CPU/GPU, and have you got one of those laptop coolers to go with it (not seen any for 17" ones out there yet?)

Let us know if reverting to XP helps - have you got the latest Vista drives - apparently Nvidia have finally released some none Beta ones - might help?

Ive stuck XP on this morning, just running 06 on it just now, ill probably stick with XP till warcraft gets fixed for vista, apparently it has a 15-20% hit.

5256 on XP - so about 200 marks improvement over vista.

well the 8600 GT and ultra are quite small.
I think they could probably stretch to a mobile version of the 8600 GT...

Dont forget that there are mobile versions of the 7950 GX 2, and that is HUGE. There are also mobile versions of the 7800 GTX, which took up lots of power and ran very hot.

I would nver say never, however I think that it will be a while before we see a mobile 8800 series card. Maybe a mobile 8600, or possibly they will do an 8300 range for laptops...

Ran 05 on XP and get 9210 3dmarks - i was getting just 8050 on vista. Thats on quality settings, no doubt i could ring a couple of hundred more marks.

Im not fussed about benchies, WOW runs lovely now at 1920x1200 - that was my main problem on vista. Company of Heroes is running lovely now too :)

Nice- as expected Vista needs some Drivers written for it before it really is a gaming platform - I suspect I'm not going to have the option of XP as it will come with only Vista which will be a shame - oh well - will just have to wait for those drivers - which ones are you running - new ones or Betas?

Mine runs a custom modified bios for both the gpu and cpu, unlocking clocks for the gpu in the nvidia control panel and some closed off bios options for the cpu.

Don't have a laptop cooler, just set the fans to kick into high when games/cpu intensive stuff starts.

Cool - might have to track you down when I get it and see if I can steal some of those from you! Would seem a shame to run it at stock when we all know that's a crime on the C2D's :D

Could you point me in the direction of those chief, i wouldnt mind giving that a crack. :)

Well I have to say I'm beginning to remember why I swore never to go back to Dell - after 2 days of arguing, the rep has now point blank refused to email me a quote and the spec list of the laptop I'm trying to buy - if I want to see what I'm buying I'll have to order it, and then if I'm a very good boy they'll put something in writing and send it to me :(   (I've run out of emoticons to express the various things I'm feeling at this point - mostly because there isn't one that covers the feelings you have for stuff you scrape off the sole of your shoe!)

As always I'm amazed when companies go out of their way to stop you spending your money with them. I spend 30 minutes arguing with my rep's manager 'susan' over this and she still wouldn't see sense!

"Can you email me the quote please"

-Why do you need it?

"I would like to see the specification of what I'm buying"

-We can't give you a quote as that quote isn't valid (Don't ask - I'm playing off one department against another and was stupid enough to be honest with them )

"But your rep just offered it to me - if I take it will it be valid"

-Yes

"Well then can you email me the quote please"

-No

"Well I can't spend over £1500 without having the deal in writing"

-Well if you buy it then we'll send you the 'quote' (AKA order confirmation)

"Riiiiiiight"

This is the first time I've ever come across a company that refuses to provide you with a quote on the grounds that you might do something stupid like buy the product at that price. Would make me laugh if it weren't for the fact that I really wanted the laptop and was willing to give them the cash (well not Susan - but her friends in another department for an even nicer discount - and the stupid thing is the other department sent me the Spec and Quote via email without my even asking just to make sure everything was alright! - You'll never guess which department was based in Europe and which was based a little further East... ;) ) 'Susan' - sure it is love - and I'm Bilboa!

(Fixed with a patch from Tech support...

3rd Boot

Needless to say none of the 'would you like me to check online for a solution' actually ended with a solution, but at least Vista got to use up my bandwidth while annoying me!

Anyway - this was all actually a good thing - none of it is serious - but I phoned up and whinged and got £100 refunded to my card :D

I can't wait to rip out the 5400 hdd in there and replace it with a new Seagate Momentus 7200.2, if only I could find some in stock! Installing games is sooooooooo slow!

One other thing - since it's a 7950GTX I take it it uses the standard Vista drivers - not the mobile ones?

You can tweak the regular ones with a inf patch, i think the site that gives you then is www.laptopvideodrivers.com or something, but i just googled laptop video drivers.

is the Dell XPS1710 anygood? i'm looking at getting a laptop before i go aussie in about 4 weeks.

I have 3 choices.

Laptop A (the D one)

DuelCore 7200
2gig Ram
160gb HD
Go 7950GTX 512mb
Vista Home Prem

Price £1590 (this is doing it online, not rang them yet)

Laptop B (Tosh one)

DuelCore 7200
2gig Ram
200gb HD
Go 7900GS 512mb
Vista Home Prem

Price Around £1400 depending where i shop (not rang them either)

Laptop C ( Rock's)

DuelCore 7200
2gig RAM
100gb HD
Go 7950GTX 512MB
Vista Home Prem

Price its about £1450 from a certain webby

Now i don't perticulary want to spend more than £1400 so i have a little left to buy a laptop bag and wireless mouse and keyboard.

Now seems i keep hearing about dell problems (ie good example is the one above) also heard a lot of laptops arrive faulty, Tosh's seem to be a good buy don't seem to hear any bad stuff in the way of faulty laptops (well not as many as Dell) as for Rock's i don't know, theres some bad stories on there own website forums but theres also some good ones.

Its a tough choice, and i'm hoping to pick one up this weekend (since the later i leave it the less chance of it arriving before i go away)

Edit: i'm buying this as a "away from home gaming laptop" since my desktop PC is already a X6800 with 8800GTX , just i'm joining the RAF some point towards summer and my laptops going to be my PC for when i'm away from home.
