Modding a car...yay or nay?

But had I had the money to buy and insure a Focus ST or similar at the time I bought it, I doubt I'd have got the Fiesta...

thats one problem right there insurance, if you cant afford to insure the focus st then you cant afford to insure the mods you do on the fiesta, so if you do have a crash then you lose the whole lot,

but i must admit itd be quite amusing when you drive past a focus st owner in a fiesta and hes putting his foot down, and they then get p****d off, i know when i had my last astra turbo the 190 version, a battered mk3 overtook me and i was gutted, its all down to what takes your fancy, i personally do like moddified cars, but opted for the fasted model i could get instead.

I think every car should be modded, there are no cars that leave the factory in a perfect state.

Whether those mods are as simple as better tyres or stereo or as wild as bodykit/engine swap or respray then that's up to the individual.

Personally I think that once you've gone beyond the basics of air filter/exhaust/stereo/alloys then you are pretty much wasting money and might as well buy a different car (especially if your car isn't the top of the range model anyway)

Whatever car you've got, there WILLnbe something better you can buy for the same amount as it would cost to mod your own car.

Multi million pound manufacturers probably know what they're doing better than an eBay seller and a bloke in his shed, so Id go for the better car every time

I have to agree with the sentiments in this thread. Going crazy on modifications is a mug's game. The modifications you currently have are about as far as I would go on your car. If you really want a quick car, buy something like an Impreza STI, fit a full exhaust and get it remapped. All the quick car you could ever want. Save the rest for insurance, petrol and tyres etc.

Or of course you could get spend some money on some quality driver training on a proper race track?

I modded my first car quite a bit, I spent more on mods that I did on the car in the end.

When I was younger I was quite happy with this, just as I was happy to mod and overclock my PC.

Now I'd just rather buy something top-spec which does everything I want it to out of the box.

As eidolon says, most cars wont come out of the factory exactly as you want them and there's some minor mods I'd still consider. However, anything big and expensive just makes me think 'save that cash towards a better car'.

why are you modding the car ?

because you want to keep it and make it individual ? then yes fine keep modifying and enjoying it.

Are you modding it because you want lots more power ? may as well buy a turbocharged car like the Focus ST where you will get more HP for your £ and get a better car to boot.

Depends on your reasons for modding it.

If your doing it purely because you want a quicker car, then buy a faster base car to start with.

If your doing it because you love the car and will be keeping it for years and want to improve on it, then mod what you've got.

Its far to subjective, I used to mod but I wouldnt do something serious like ITB's or charge an NA motor, its far to expensive you might as well go for something from the factory that has a turbo or supercharger

I never understand why people turbo charge Honda's, I find it really strange when you can just by a turbo charged car and have it remapped

Another thing I dont like modding is suspension, its a pain getting it set up right, its expensive and again you should just get the right car that has the right setup from the factory that suits you're needs

However, things like wheels, induction kit and exhaust system are fine as you can bolt them on and off with ease and can make the car look and sound better for relatively little money but I would only do that if you really liked the car and intended on keeping it a long time, although I would only fit an aftermarket exhaust if there was a particulary good available and the OEM system had rotted through and needed replacing

I think on my next car I will just buy an intake as the sound amuses my tiny brain greatly, other than that I prefer a nice stereo and speakers and a decent satnav, some sticky tyres and keep the car polished/waxed and in good condition

My car has only hade a race cat, cat back, and a remap at the minute, will continue to mod it until I have done as much as I want to do to it.

I believe modding is a good thing. When it gets to the point you're ripping out engines to put in bigger ones from different cars then perhaps you've gone too far. Styling mods are fine, if it makes you happier with how the car looks then so be it, nothing wrong with trying to make your car "your own" so to speak. Of course don't be fooled it will never add value to the car, however most modders know this anyway so it's a moot point.

To put it simply modding is a hobby, other people like to go out sailing or building train sets which i see no point to just as some people see no point in modding, horses for courses and all that.

As for the OP, if you're just looking for more power don't bother. If you enjoy modding and are going to get some great enjoyment out of doing this then why not. Obvious considerations are can you afford it? I assume you can or you wouldn't be thinking about it, would you be better suited getting the faster car then modding that over time? or would you rather keep your current car and spend the money there? Some people get more attached to their cars than others so i can understand that some people who want quicker cars mod as oppose to getting a new one. cars can often have a lot of memories attached to them.

Tend to agree with the people who are saying little bits (like you've already done) are reasonable, but taking it further really requires some thought as it starts getting expensive!

All I want to get done on the Impreza is exhaust and possibly a remap at some point, any more is a waste and should just swap it for an STi.
