Modding a car...yay or nay?

I had mine 4 years ago and it had 50K on the clock and it handled like a POS, TBH you wont read anything positive from me about an S14A I hated mine so much I only owned it 3 months and I was just glad to get my money back for it I like my current car more than the S14A and I drive my current car with a brown paper bag over my head

Agreed a lot of people buy expensive components and then have no clue how to set it up, but this is a different issue to the components being the problem in the first place.

stop picking then

that was exactly the point janesy was making. Not that coilovers automatically make a ride back breaking and are only fitted by clueless idiots.

Perhaps! I just get tired of slating the modified scene gets by people who probably don't have a clue what they are talking about (not necessarily referring to any particular person here..).

All right ladies calm down. What I meant to say is people do these modifications without second thought and think it will give them the advantage that they require but more often than not the handling of the car becomes too compromised for British roads as they have simply made the car too stiff for the typical British B-road and not put any thought in actually having the geometry configured for road use.

I didn't think I needed to expand that far but obviously I did.

Indeed - the problem is a lot of people get confused between the clueless and tasteless scallies driving their Fiestas, Corsas and Saxos and genuine enthusiasts who actually know what they are doing.

While I agree the standard car is soft which is no surprise as it is a tourer, it certainly doesnt handle like a POS. Its not an amazing handling car by a long way but it is quite capable at travelling at speed on country roads. I can only think that your car had something fundamentally wrong with it or your driving style just didnt suit it.

The only 2 mods worth doing on the ST are Eibach's and Mountune.

Both drastically alter the cars characteristics in a good way. The mountune or any other ECU upgrade is a must as it alters the power delivery in such a way that the car is just mental quick.

Eibach's obviously help the handling immensly.

For 11k you could easily find a decent spec low milage ST and have some cash spare to do those upgrades. Mines for sale btw :P

Seen it and its the best colour, but I'd much prefer an ST-3. Am not yet in the position to start buying anyhow....may yet keep the Fiesta, Mountune it, add the diff I already have and leave it at that...oh and buy a house :p

Planned mods for mine include; tinted window, eibach springs, turbo downpipe, CAIS, possibly dump valve, possibly an RS spoiler if one comes up cheap 2nd hand, plus other little bits and pieces, already painted the fog light surrounds, just need more paint to do the grills.

So what we are saying (Using the S14a as an example), is that some mods are worth doing. In this case the suspension, and the roll of the car (Not to mention axle tramp (not technically axle tramp but let's not get into that!)).

I think the bottom line is that you already have a factory tuned car that is pretty damn good already, and throwing money at it won't improve it by that much. Fitting a supercharger to your FWD car will make traction a major issue, and gearbox failure fairly likely (they aren't built for the torque if I had to take a guess).

Good luck with whatever you do :) It's your car/life do whatever the heck you want!

I would love to supercharge the the Astra, full suspension upgrade, GSI kit.

But that would come in to 5k~, when I think of the cars I could get for a bit more it would be pointless.

Mind you it would be fun having a 260bhp Astra. :p

The back windows look better tinted on my car, and having seen a number of ST's with louder dump valves at the show's I've been to, it's not as stupid as a Coras B 1.2 with an electronic dumpvalve, and sounds alright.

That makes no sense at all to me. Why not just but a GSi and start from a better base point?
