MODS - Can we have tapatalk plugin for OCUK forums?

IATL ;)

Tapatalk costs you, the member, doesn't it? £2 in the UK?

Can't remember the price, and I don't use the app anymore, but even if a forum does support it you don't have to use the app. You will just get a message popup on iOS (not sure about Android) informing you a forum is Tapatalk compatible, you can ignore said message and carry on as before.

You pay for the app, and not access to the forum.

It would be a welcome addition for me, I'd actually use the forum a lot more when out and about, it's easily the greatest mobile app to browse forums on.

Wouldn't it require OcUK to install a plugin to the forums which could, in theory, expose everybody's account details to a 3rd party?

Plus there is the aspect of tapatalk making money from our members desire to connect on the move. For that reason alone (considering the vast majority will not own tapatalk) I'd recommend vbulletin's own apps.

Would prefer some kind of spoiler system. Either the ability to black out text that can be read if highlighted or one of the other systems.

Yeah, it's called changing the colour of the text to the forum background :p

This site is missing a lot of basic functionality that other forums have as standard. Lets get those up to date before faffing around with this new fangled stuff.

OCUK, the high tech computer forum that after 8 years only recently introduced a favicon for browers, and still botched it up with a white background at first. :p

can we have that?
A certain competitor's forum has an excellent mobile website :)

You'd have to ask Spie :)

I can't see why not though, my only concern would be search* - so long as it played well with the sphinx plugin I'm sure it'd be fine. Probably need VB4 though (no bad thing).

*built in search on big forums is so slow it's basically broken

Downloaded all the free forum browser for iPhone and non have OcUK :(
Many are VB4 compatible. Not too sure what that means lol!

What we need is vB to make a phone app to perform the same function, but work on all forums (not just their own). Then I see no reason to hold back.

A mobile site would be good as well. Yes, OcUK is OK on mobiles but it's not great. Requires a bit of fiddling and zooming, whereas Tapatalk is so easy and well designed. I know a lot of competitors have either Tapatalk support or a mobile site which makes browsing a lot easier. These forums aren't associated with the shop (the official line?), but deals are posted daily (which I like to read!) and there's customer support and so on. So it would be for the benefit of the shop, as well as the huge community. The problem is it being a 3rd party and popups (if they can't be disabled). If OcUK agreed, I would pay a small amount (hopefully with other members) to fund the franchising cost for a dedicated Tapatalk-style app that are offered by the maker (c.f. - XDA Forums). You don't have to charge for the app as far as I know, but then there may be ads, which is possibly an issue...

Sphinx is a separate search daemon which skips mysql completely for searching and on VB3 is a bit of an ugly hack due to it not supporting plugins for search.

VB4 still has no official support (afaik) but does allow search plugins so sphinx can be added in a much more 'supported' fashion.

TBH after a few moments looking forum runner looks a much better bet than tapatalk.

I bough it thinking it would work with ocuk :(

Would be nice, the forums are a bit clunky in a web browser.

I don't think cost is the issue, trust is certainly a barrier (due to the nature of these apps the companies behind them are small to non existent).

For example: http://www.tapatalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7429

Could be nothing but things like that are bound to cause concern - you're putting a lot of trust in the hands of a complete stranger.

Vbulletin do make apps for android and iphone, tbh I've not really looked at them but the word is they aren't as full featured as 3rd party apps.

ok - thanks :)

Forum runner doeasn't support ocuk does it?

Yes security with a 3rd party is a problem, although Tapatalk is already very popular and the thread you have linked is not resolved in any way. I do understand the problem though. :( The vbulletin apps are only for the vbulletin forums (i.e. their own company forums), not any forum running their software.

Perhaps a mobile site would work best.
