Monaco Grand Prix 2016, Monte Carlo - Race 6/21

A Power Unit is made of 6 parts. The Internal Combustion Engine (V6), Turbo, MGU-H (motor attached to the turbo), MGU-K (KERS motor), Energy Store (battery), and the Control Electronics (ECU and associated bits).

Each driver is limited to 5 of each of the above parts per season. They can mix and match individual components to build the Power Unit for each race.

If a driver uses more than 5 of any of the parts then that means they get a grid penalty (usually 10 places) the first time they use it.

They are also restricted on Gearboxes. Each gearbox must be used for 6 consecutive races. If a driver takes a new gearbox before it has done 6 races, they get a 5 place grid penalty.

Yup, penalties and plenty of them. Didn't Jenson end up with a 40+ grid penalty at one point? At least this year they don't get carried over, they've scrapped that rule

Also, watching the FR 2.0 race at the moment, it's quite damp right now.

They scrapped the carry over rule a couple of years back, but Honda then showed why it was needed. They were taking the pee at some points. Taking 5 new parts of the PU and getting a 50 place penalty and stattin a couple of spots back from where they qualified.

I get that Honda needed to develop and testing is too restrictive, but by the end of the year they were up to having used more than double the allowed 5 of each part. Way more than the few people they did get classed above in the WCC.

So no further penalties after the first time they use it? Or does it then restart?

And you can reuse old parts if they can be repaired, or use them in free practice if unsure. They used to bolt in a new motor for the real power tracks such as Monza, but with the engine restrictions now it's less feasible, and given the number of elements to a current power unit the freshness of an engine has less of an influence anyway.

Ian Ferguson (BBC forecaster who regularly tweets about the weather for F1 events) was saying that he expected some heavy showers this morning but that it will be damp for the start and clearing up thereafter. Many of the early showers missed the track but it did indeed bucket down a couple of times. Obviously everything is complicated by the nature of the surrounding hills, so it's going to be a case of wait and see.

Need lots of rain to make this good :)

No, lots of rain means lots of safety cars and red flags. Let's just hope for changeable conditions!

It should be an interesting race rain or shine given Ricciardo's strategy (if dry) and Verstappen trying to make his way through the field.

Not sure why Lewis seems to have mad a conscious effort to ostracise himself from all the other drivers.

He's never been best buddies with them but he seems incredibly aloof now.

Seems to me like he's just taking time to gather his thoughts before a high pressure race, He's never really interacted much with the other drivers.
