Mondeo ST24

The interior facelift was late 99S plate onwards - this introduced the better quality leather, the chrome interior handles, etc.

There was no change to the quality of materials used. Late 99V plate onwards gained side airbags and SATC on Ghia X cars, and are noticeable becuase they have black not bodycoloured B pillars.

actually, hang on, if the facelift interior was S plate onwards then why does NMS's car only have the earlier awful wood and grey leather?

Tom|Nbk -

The major thing that is going to sting you on the st24 will be the4 insurance, evan at 20 with 1 year no claims my lowest was £2700 comp. Perhaps it's my area code? who knows :p .

Ben.

I personally prefer the ST, the seats in the Ghayer X arent as good as the 'bucket' seats in the ST and it saves a whole lot of bother swapping the suspension over, as the handling on the ST is much better.

Obvioulsy the insurance is pretty stupid on the ST, so the ghia is a better option

What seats are in the ST24? The Recaros in my ST200 are great, nice and grippy but comfortable for the 4-5 hours trips I've done :).

Actually, is £2500 ST200 money yet? They do avoid one of the best points of the Mk2 now - value for money - but have most of the Ghia X comforts and ST24 handling too with extra performance on top. Insurance is one group higher, so if the ST24 is stretching it that may be too far.

Tom, I've just done a quote on Admiral.

Age 19, 2.5 years license and 1 NCB. £1050 TPFT or £1425 FC (£150 EX) Mondeo ST 24.

ST 200 = £1650 TPFT

2.5 V6 Ghia X = £1100 TPFT or £1275 F/C (£150 EX)

There are a couple of ST200's on Autotrader for 3k. If you could stretch to it the ST200 has a much nicer engine (not to mention a lovely colour), the bog standard V6 always felt a bit lacking to me.

if you're serious about handling, as someone has said, you're going to replace the shocks and springs as it's going to be tired on any car this age that people are going to have driven hard. ...and none of the stock stuff is a patch on the aftermarket stuff available. I replaced mine with Koni adjustable shocks and springs and its much better :)

They're not bucket seats, but they still actually hold quite well....and they're full heated leather rather than the half of the st24 that has the horrible pattern in the middle.

Also, the major differences in engine between the st200 engine and normal V6 can be changed for a few hundred quid anyway, and are very easy for novices to change (upper and lower inlet manifolds, throttle body, are very easy and make a massive difference in the way it drives, and cams I believe are relatively so....the head is slightly ported more too which is a much harder job to change but doesnt make that much difference really).

ST200 for £3k if it is in good nick is a bargain though! When i bought mine I paid £1500 for it but it needed a fair bit of work (wheels bumpers and alternators all needed replacing)

Tom.
