Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

The problem is if it was fraudulent and they didn't freeze it they'd still be the bad guys.
As long as they don't make a habit of it I don't see it as a bad thing.

The thing which irked me is that they asked for an invoice from the company nearly straight away which I uploaded, they then insisted on having the phone call. I get there's scams, but in my initial response I said it was for some tiles, from a local tile company, here's the invoice.

I guess it's a question of why they thought it was fraudulent. Normally these things trigger now when the account/sort code don't match the account holder. But if that's all accurate, and the company is fully legit then it shouldn't be triggering any fraudulent flags.

Not a modern fintech, but First Direct has now dropped all fees for foreign spending and cash withdrawals for current account holders spending via its debit card. Transforming it from a one of the worst travel cards around to one of the best.

Sure some other things are cheaper still Chase with the 1% chashback or barclaycard rewards 0.25%, or Plutus with curve 3% plus insurance etc.., but some like the warm and cozy feeling they get from banking with a well known UK brand (even if it really is just HSBC under the hood).

One thing that surprised me, was learning the FD only has 1.5m customers. Considering it has been handing out £175 bribes left right and centre for years now, that's a pitiful amount. Chase reached that in little over a year.

I left First Direct for Monzo, mainly due to their app being pretty poor. Everything else about them is excellent, and the fact you can talk to a human being usually within a minute. Recently however finally received a £89.70 something refund from an overpayment on a credit card I had with them when I closed the account in 2020. It only took 3 years and multiple phone calls to sort it out.

Is there a way with Monzo to highlight what upcoming payments it thinks you don't have enough money in your bills pot for? I don't see a straightforward way apart from to calculate it yourself based on the dates.

In the end yes, although I had to have them call me which could be massively inconvenient if I wasn’t able to take a call.

They call you back? Don't like that at all. I'd much rather be put on hold (despite how aggravating it can be), at least that way you know that you're talking to the real organisation because you initiated the call.

It was all a bit weird if I'm honest, I can't remember any proper checks being done but then nothing sensitive was spoken about.

Whatever it was, it has me considering my options and maybe moving banks.

Thats weird, I actually bought nearly £400 worth of tiles from Topps tiles using my Monzo debit card 3 months ago and it went through straight away no problem

This was a BACS payment, we'd bought from the local shop before but we had an outstanding balance to pay and we didn't have time to go in to pay by car, hence invoice and BACS via email. I didn't expect there to be any issues given it's to a business!

Slightly OT but hopefully a quick answer. Just joined Chase and got the card, and there are no numbers on the card??…..

No, seriously, noticed there is no signature strip.
Is this the norm now from some banks? Not seen it before so just curious if it’s a Chase thing.

Some banks are adopting it, it’s more secure.
