Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

Nobody at all have any thoughts on my previous post? It probably wouldn't be too much I'd be transferring into Euros. Maybe £8k at most.

From September they'll be charging 0.4% to exchange it back, so make sure you take that into account too. It's not much, but it's still something when you're talking large figures.

That's a good point, I missed this bit:

So that implies that some members of staff can see PIN codes. I wouldn't expect ant member of staff to be able to view a PIN.

I think it's a bit vague if anything, "tightly secured with extremely limited access" doesn't necessarily imply that there are some staff that have access to raw PIN information.

It could mean that only a select number of staff have access to the encrypted data that hold the PIN numbers. As I say, it's a bit vague.

It says it was notifying users to change their PINs, i only got notified to update my app. It seems the PINs were only getting logged if you had used the "card number reminder" or were cancelling any standing orders. I've never done either of those, so my PIN shouldn't have been logged.

Had a discussion about this elsewhere but you can guarantee that if a normal high Street bank had an issue like this they would sweep it under the carpet and hope nobody found out.

Indeed,

Any major controversies could stop growth and that could mean an early death for a fledgling company. The big banks, can just take the fines and not change anything.

Monzo have just offered to pay me a day early. Got a disability benefit going in Monday and they have just offered to pay me a day early. Said they can do it for all future regular payments like benefits or salaries. Never seen this before.

Starling shows my salary as a pending incoming payment a day before I get paid. Then at midnight on the dot it hits my account. Which is nice. Never got that with the old dinosaur banks, usually my pay didn't show up until 5 in the morning with them.

I'm still using Starling as my main current account since 2017. Salary and all direct debits. I keep a rolling balance of over £2K in it.

I just don't get folk who get it just for holiday/aboard but go running back to their old high street dinosaur bank for everything else.

I’m just waiting for a easy way to separate committed spending from day to day money. Monzo are in the staff testing phase of committed spending pots which will be enough for me to move fully over. I can put money into a pot for all the monthly bills and Direct Debits will come from that pot.

I get paid every Thursday and I bank with Santander, my wages are in my bank by 9pm on the Wednesday, on the odd occasion I'll have to wait until 10.30pm but never any later.

I make loads of cashback with Santander, mainly as I have a mortgage with them (I shopped around and they were still the best for the mortgage). I use Monzo for when I travel though.

My main tactic is to maximise the perks from the card and also security.

1 - Use credit card whenever possible (that in turn, sign up for cards that fits your use, whether it is cash back or points)
2 - Use that card everywhere, of course if the fees wipes out the points (say 2% fee and you get 1% cash back then that's pointless).
3 - In that case then fall back to a Mastercard (credit card first).
4 - Last resort is to use a debit card.

I put very few items through my debit card, in the UK almost everything goes through Amex whenever possible. I would sometimes go out of my way to find a website that takes it, or use PayPal which is linked to Amex to check out instead. Using credit card you get both protection and points/cashback.

Monzo/Starling is fine as a last resort or taking cash out, nothing more.

Pretty impressed with Starling. Moving back to UK in a few weeks and thought this would be a good time to ditch RBS my branch doesn't exist anymore and their online banking sucks balls.

Account all sorted in a few hours. Euro account done as well, major plus for me because most of my money is in Euros at the moment and I want to keep it that way while Brexit sorts itself out.
