Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

If I go through the process to transfer my account, doesn’t the old one get closed automatically?

Yes, Monzo don’t offer a partial switch which some banks do. That would leave your existing account open but move salary, direct debits and route payments.

I pay cash into my wife’s work nationwide account and she just moves it over.

Just had an email stating Starling will soon be rolling out in app cheque cashing so no need to post it to them anymore on that rare occasion some company sends you a cheque rather than operating in the 21st century and just bank transferring what they owe you.

I was quite surprised this wasn't a feature from the off considering some other banks have offered it for a while.

I have revolut but seeing a few posts about concerns. Are people recommending Monzo instead?

For travelling. No not a chance. Starling is better. For domestic stuff then it's moot.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Revolut for travelling, just top it up when you need it and don't keep hoards of cash in the account since the 'banking licence' and 'compensations guarantee' are somewhere between optimistic thinking and pure fantasy.

British Gas/Centrica... we’re looking at you, you backward fools. Quite why they can’t pay back to the account baffles me... baffles my brother-in-law as well, and he works for them!

I’m pleased Starling now have this though.

How does the switch service work for salary payments? Do they tell the employer your new bank account details? Usually I'd have to fill out a change of details form at work if I have changed address or bank etc.

As a reminder, avoid Revolut:
  • Revolut whistleblower had concerns over CEO conduct and compliance [BBC News]
  • It's banking license is in Lithuania and even their government are asking questions [Telegraph]
In the interest of openness, I am a Monzo shareholder.

Revolut isn't FSCS protected still as well right? You wouldn't want to leave any cash in there.

Yep it's all automatic in my experience and I've done 3 so far.

Yeah I've done 2 switches now, although I did give my employer a heads up regarding the change of account - not worth risking not getting paid :)

No issues whatsoever. Still using Starling as my daily spending/budgeting account - all my bills come out of my main account.

This has worked amazingly well in all honesty, it's reined in my spending and I've managed to save a lot more than I would have otherwise.

I was nearly total cashless last week went Amsterdam from Sunday to Thursday and used my starling via Samsung galaxy watch for everything it even allowed me to pay €42 bill via tap n pay . Only cash I used was in the toilets and the €1 charge to use them

I am likely to switch from Llyods to Starling fulltime at some point over the next month or so. Getting sick of the Llyods website experience when accessing my account - Just show me my sodding details, don't advertise crap in my face before I get to the crucial information I really want. Their app is fine however and they've kept it clean. Since I am in the motions of purchasing my first place, the missus and I may even open a joint account on Starling.

I'm off to San Francisco in a few hours so I'll be using my card there. Had no real (magstripe switching itself off caught me twice early on in) issues last year when I went to New York so I am positive I'll have the same experience.

The more I think about it, the more likely I am to switch. What annoys me about Nationwide is that whenever I want to make any changes to regular payments or add new people, I have to mess about with the stupid card reader.

Barclays was great for that, the app had a virtual one built in and I’ve tested with Monzo and all it needs is my card PIN to add a new person.

@Feek Don't overlook starling :) They are also doing some good things. you won't go far wrong with either though to be honest.

I like Starling, it was my first Fintech bank. However the features that I use the most on Monzo don't exist there last time I checked. Paying bills from pots is a must have feature that means I no longer have to run a separate current account for paying bills, to keep it away from daily spending. Getting payments a day early is always nice, got a payout on my pet insurance a day early yesterday. Monzo plus is launching soon, that should bring some of the features I had with Nationwide, but in a more configurable package.

Monzon also didn't close their forum like Starling did, they are very active and always getting input from the community which I think is important in shaping the future of the product.

Both Monzo and Starling are still crap as they still do not allow export of statement data in OFX and even then its pain to get at from the app for a CSV file.

I only use starling when i need cash from a cashpoint or the pub, load it via a proper banks app.

So because of your niche use case, the entirety of both banks are crap? :p
