Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

Check Monzo Labs as I had to enable it there but it's possible this has been rolled out to iOS first.

Well I seemed to have signed up to both Monza and Starling. I loved the detailed communication from Starling regarding their ipad app.

I honestly don't know of any other bank with this level of customer communications.

Althought I personally prefer the Monzo app, the comms and the way Starling go about running their business seems pretty exceptional.

I'm going to stick a small amount of money in both and see how I get on.

I switched to Monzo from First Direct a few months ago, my mrs has also switched from Natwest. Both of us are happy and enjoy the bills and savings features Monzo offers.

With the closure of so many high street bank stores the only way is online or telephone banking.
Our local Barclays has reduced opening hours right down since Covid and even though Mrs. Feek has been with them for years, she's opened a Monzo account now and is considering going full Monzo because she's realised that she actually doesn't really need to go into a branch. The current situation will be a big boost to online banks and damaging to the traditional ones with high street branches.

I don’t have a local Barclays it closed a while back. A lot of people around this area moved banks because of these closures.

I recon in few months time I won’t have a Barclays any more. Monzo and Stirling are doing a good job.

I wanted to check to see if these online banks would hold up and to see how much downtime there was. Especially the ones without a web app rather than a native app.

Won’t be good not been able to access your own money.

I've used Starling for "spending" money for the last couple of years and they have been great. Really good customer service and I really like the way they do business. I had a problem with money disappearing from my account due to a likely cloned card when in Florida but they very quickly resolved it and got the money back for me. I have now made the full switch to Starling.

Thinking of moving our joint account over to Monzo because they way they handle 'pots' is just that bit better for managing bills etc. Does anyone know whether both of us need to have an individual account first if using the account switching service? I don't really want an individual Monzo account (neither does the Mrs) because we won't use them.

Yea you both need separate accounts.

I use Starling as my main account and have done since 2017. Salary goes in and all direct debits and spending etc. I love it.

I also have a Monzo account just because but I don't really use that. More of a back up.

Most folk rate Starling over Monzo as they have more features. Yes with Monzo you can get your salary a day early but that only really works for the first month as after that you are still waiting the same amount of time between pay days. Starling do show your pending incoming payments e.g. salary a day before it hits your account though which I find is a nice touch, and always hits the account dead on midnight. When I was with RBS it never used to show until anytime between 2 and 5 in the morning.

Beware if you ever need to pay cash into your Monzo account as you can only do that at PayPoint shops, and Monzo only allow £1000 over a lifetime of the account to be deposited as cash. Starling allow cash deposits at Post Office counters and there is no lifetime limit.

Thanks. That's pretty much the only thing that puts me off.

Can I ask why?

I opened up a Monzo account just to use as a joint bank account for me and my girlfriend. I had to set up a personal account, but it only takes a few minutes and you don't have to use the personal one at all if you don't want to. No need to swap your current account to Monzo for example. I like how you can just swipe on your phone between personal account and joint account if you wish.

It's £1k cash every 180 days.

Just keep a current account open with a local branch for cash payments and then move it over. I wouldn't be handing over large amounts of cash to a post office or paypoint.

Yep I still have a Lloyds Bank and a TSB current account that come in handy for this and cheque deposits (branch opening times permitting). Although you can now photo deposit cheques up to £500 on the Starling app.

You get a receipt at Post Office and PayPoint showing the deposit and hopefully an instant notification on your phone so not sure what there is not to trust. Although I'd trust a Post Office counter over a PayPoint shop. The problem with a lot of PayPoint shops is they don't like large cash payments as it can cost them more in bank charges to deposit than the commission they make from PayPoint.

Not sure why for the Post Office? Money shows in your account immediately so you’d know if there was a problem.

I am actually curious about having a normal UK current account that gives me a bonus of some form to keep open to pay in lots of cash if the need ever arises. It doesn't happen often but I have sold cars before for and had over £10k in cash to pay in (and then fill out forms at the branch!). That said I could use a friend or family account.
