Mopeds

TBH some of the Highway Code is prehistoric and unrealistic to modern day terms, this is one of those things.

Whilst I totally agree that they shouldnt be on the road Ive had far worse than that on a regular basis. A petrol station here literally leads straight out onto a 70mph dual carriageway, you have maybe 15-20 metres of sliproad and then your in the left lane, and thats from a standing start, now thats scary at 5pm.

But yes, they should be removed from any roads that do over 50mph IMO as they are more of a hazzard than they are good. 90% of them are driven by docile chavs that shouldnt be on the roads anyways.

...well they do provide mild amusement as the neanderthal sitting astride them attempts to take it up a steep incline (say, ooh, a road hump for example).

Truth, example :

A ped so underpowered it couldnt climb a steep hill near me at 5mph, I laughed even more when a runner actually ran past us all and had caught up with the moped, these things are jokes :D .

I hate mopeds. The only people around here who use them seem to be chavs with L plates on them.

I saw a group of SEVEN chavs on mopeds who stopped and then chatted to each other about how "bad" they were and in their words "cruisin" (lol :D)

The funniest thing I ever saw was when a couple of chavs pulled up to some lights both in one lane and a ferrari 355 then pulled up beside them. On green the chavs actually seriously tried to out accelerate the ferrari and ducked down behind their visors to try and be aerodynamic :D the ferrari then shot off and the chavs stuck the middle finger up at him feeling pretty ****** off.

Then they decided to try and pull wheelies on them and yanked back on the handle bars only to get the front wheel off the ground by an inch.

One then fell off and started swearing at me as I zipped off on my mountain bike. :D

You can tell I was happy that day.

I think the government should allow 125's at 16 and there wouldn't be so much of a problem.

That would be stupid if the government allowed that. You give a 16 year old a 50cc scooter which when tuned (which it will be) can do about 60-70mph. You give that same 16 year old a 2 stroke 125cc motorbike ( for example RS 125), those things tuned will do over 100mph, and are quite quick on acceleration aswell.

16 year old + CBT + 100+mph bike = Something very bad happening

Totally agree that they shouldnt be allowed on dual carriageways. I dont mind them on single A-Roads though - no worse than a tractor and easier to get passed.

The thing I just dont get though, is how come in Italy/Spain etc, kids look really cool on them, zipping through traffic with no protective clothing on etc, but here they tend to be ridden by idiots in tracksuit bottoms and trainers :/

It does seem an anachronism that they are banned from motorways yet are permitted on A roads which are like motorways in every way except name.

I remember those days. Zipping bout town on a scooter wearing a pair of jeans, jacket and a helmet (no gloves....makes me cringe now).

I would hate to think what would happen if they came off at speed. I was wearing leathers in my motorbike accident, would hate to have seen the result if i wasnt.

There isn't a great deal of logic to who can use what road at all. It should be done by speed limit and i would stop cyclists and underpowered mopeds using any road that has a limit above 60mph. I'd like to make it 40, but with the NSL thats not practical.

I the same way, i really can't see why learners can't use a motorway when you can use a 70mph dual carriageway. Surely it's better to allow you to use them - and even include them on test routes maybe - than it is for someone to pass their test then drive home on the motorway having never been on one before.

Oh, quick OT here, out of intrest, is there some sort of law that states with R plates you are restricted to a specific speed on a motorway?

A scooter that does 30MPH is dangerous on any road except 30MPH roads :) even then if it's a 30MPH road with a hill, it'll struggle to do 15-20MPH, which is also dangerous!

Law needs to be changed, 'full power' 50cc scooters will do 50-60MPH, this is much safer imo, atleast can keep up with the flow of traffic. I know they're 16 and all but I dont think scooter related deaths due to excessive speed is exactly high so cant see it causing a massive problem. Either that or as said, ban them from fast roads but this would include NSL so means they'd never be able to get from 1 town to the next :)

Exactly, thing is if they wanna make people wait til they are 18 to drive a car I reckon they should let them be able to ride a bike a bit sooner.

Then you won't have the annoying sounds.

Majority of younger people that own bikes that are 50cc or 125cc are all 2 strokes. These are the bikes that sound like wasps etc. So giving them 125's at 16 wont take away the noise.

When i was 17 i chose a 4 stroke 125 becuase i didnt want to tune it up. If i did i would have chosen a buzzy little 2 stroke (wasp).
