I think this is in the right place... well i'll be turning 16 next month, which means three things:

  • I can legally have sex.
  • I can put on the lottery.
  • I can get a moped license.
And it's the third one that i've got a few questions about. I found this page which seemed to answer a lot of them. I was just wondering if anybody here had done it, and if so would you recommend it?

As i understand you have to apply for a provisional moped license (£50) then complete a CBT course (£100 ish). Then for a full license you have to do a theory test (around £20) and a practical test (£50-100). Then there's the getting a moped and insuring it which varies a lot...

I was hoping somebody could tell me if i was right, explain a bit more about the costs involved and offer your opinion as to if you think it would be worth looking more into. Thanks a lot :)

Dont bother with theory or test on a Moped, apply for your provisional and do your CBT and ride a moped on L plates for a year, then if you like 2 wheels you will want to do your full test on a 125 Motorbike.

Helmet is a requirement so Id advise spending as much as you can afford or if not in sales you can get lids for under £100
I would also advise gloves and a jacket minium, gloves you can get some for around £30 I think, a Leather jacket for about £80 or a textile one for around £40

Please wait until you're seventeen. Then, you can either get a proper bike, or a car if that's your preference. The less of these chav-peds on the road the better.

You mean mod scooter? ;)

But yeah, i haven't reached any firm decisions. There's not many places i travel to now that i can't do in under an hour on my pedal bike... i'm just thinking that it would be a good experience, and to get that now would be valuable for when i started doing some more serious motoring later on, even if i don't actually end up getting a moped.

I know you only had questions about mopeds, but as for the other two;

1) Wear a condom
2) Buy lucky dip, nothing could be worse than that one week you don't put on your regular numbers, they come up.

As for the moped, just get a CBT done and ride around for a year before worrying about getting a full restricted licence, theory test etc. Gives you a chance to save up too, so you can get a better first proper bike(if you so wish that is). And also, spend as much as you can on a helmet :).

Only advice i can give since its all changed since i was 16 is HAVE FUN. I remember being 16 and getting my first moped.. Had a right laugh, got some freedom.. Not knocking peds but the the day i hit 17 i did get a car though cos peds are naff come 17.

Thanks for all the help guys... well, most of you :p

Do you reckon it affects the situation in any way that the only way i can think of raising the cash would be to make and sell guitars?

Instead of a Moped, you could look at some geared bike like mine. I have the 'Aprilia Rx 50'. Its a 100 times better than a moped for the simple reason, gears! These bikes have 6 gears, so the bike doesn't sound like a vibrator and you gain the experience of changing gears, ready for your bigger bike if you ever get one.

Buying one of these types of bikes can be expensive, but depends where you look. I got mine which is an 04 plate for £600, but that needed a few things doing to it. I would recommend looking over at autotrader or pistonheads for bikes.

That is correct, £50 for the licence and then £90-£120 depending where you live for your cbt. By the way, the cbt is very easy if you listen to the instructor at all times, and you will have major fun!

Taxing a bike at your age, since its a 50cc, tax each year is £15. However, this may rise when you come to buy a bigger bike (not sure on what cc it is). Insuring the bike can be a pain, looking for the cheapest. I would recommend giving 'mce' a try. I found them the cheapest (£190 per year, 3rd party only). Because the bike was worth £600, I wasn't willing to pay around £400 a year for tpft with an access of £300, just wasn't worth it!

Lastly, on to the gear! Your clothing isn't something you want to go cheap on, especially the helmet! 'Shark', 'AGV' etc are really good helmet manufacture that offer great pieces of kit for a good x amount of money, so have a look and see what you like.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself a little here, after all its just for one yr and in its restricted form, you'll only get 30mph out of it..
