Mopeds

Don't be silly, everyone knows the standard safety gear for moped riders are white nike trainers, nylon tracksuit bottoms, and a cotton adidas hoody ;)

Seems to be round here anyways, lol.

I'm sure the majority of the muppets would ride around without a helmet given the choice.

Not that I'm saying the OP is anything like those, just they seem to be the majority who subsequently tar every moped rider with that image.

+1

I had a 1994 Yamaha Jog 50 at 16. Went all over on it. Good times! :D

Okay, i have a question. What the hell happened? It seems to me like (as is often the case) there was a good choice of great mopeds between the early 60's right up till the end of the 80's, with some really iconic models like the fizzy and the Super Cub. These ran their course and were replaced by... what, exactly? As far as i can tell mopeds of today are either cheap plastic rubbish or aimed at chavs. Thing is though, with these sorts of restrictions there's not many places that you can improve, and 30 or 40 year old mopeds that have been looked after are miles better than those available today, and were a fair wack cheaper when you take inflation into account. They got the formula right, and with just a few small adjustments to prevent rust and stuff like that there's no reason i can see for them not to be made and sold exactly as they were, as long as they're priced sensibly.

Actually, it seems as though Honda still make the Super Cub... it's just impossible to find any information on the latest incarnations :(

Scooters. Thousands of the bloody things, mainly imported from China/Taiwan. :(

There's some nice looking 50cc sports bikes (contradiction in terms perhaps) from Spain, e.g. Motorhispania and Rieju, but you'd look like a real plonker riding one of these around in restricted form.

There's always monkey bikes I suppose, seem to have made a bit of a comeback in recent years.

Are you seriously suggesting a monkey bike? A full on moped was unpopular enough, are they even road legal? And if so, is there any point in having one over a push bike?

Not seriously, just thought I'd mention it as they seem to be quite popular.

Of course, just as they were back in the 70's.

:confused: I'm really lost with your question; is there any point in getting any other kind of moped over a push bike?

I'm never going to get to bed at this rate :D

In the early to mid 1980's 50cc's where common as white dog poo on the pavement, you couldn't go anywhere without seeing one, ten or twenty of them. Then their prices went up like a rocket from mid 1986. My AR50 cost £450 new and just over a year later I px'd it for £450 as new bikes then cost £750+. From then on the market just seemed to die off by a large degree and by 1990 you'd just see the odd one or two if you where lucky.

Those around that time will remember the drone of a pack of 50cc's running early micron's lol You'd have to wait around 5 minutes before the sound started to fade out.

Well my advise is, take it easy on your first ride, I was 18 when I did my first ride on the moped after I got my car license, and crashed it on the first ride, scuffed passed a post and ended in the grass. And be careful and assume cars don't see ya, you'll be far worse off in a crash !

Aside from that, it's cheap A to B transport, if it breaks it's a couple of tenners to fix, even for a cracked cilinder. Fuel costs next to nothing, if you buy something like Tomos you can ride a week on 5 quid of fuel and insurance is often very reasonable.
